Meeting Notes
16th October 2023

Guest Speakers
Marlize Pretorius
and Steve Jansz

President, Jill Elias, opened the meeting at 6.30 pm.
Welcome to our guest speakers, Marlize Pretorius and Steve Jansz from YouthCARE, Nan Walker from Rotary Club of Perth, Mathilda Hontoir and Michael Elias.
John Thornton led the meeting in singing the National Anthem.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
When was the Royal Perth Yacht Club established?
Answer:1865
Answered correctly by David Ellis, who knows too much.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
Neil Wilkie told the meeting of how June was charged $250 for her recent cardiac surgery upon admission to hospital, but the rest of the tab (a mere $26,750) was paid for by their health insurer. A healthy return on premiums paid over the years, no doubt, and a quick return for June to good health.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES: Susan Watson announced this week’s birthdays:
Members’ birthdays:
Kent Warburton 81 years on 17 October 2023.
Jason van Straalen 53 years on 22 October 2023.
Anniversaries:
Jason and Aisha van Straalen 4 years on 19 October 2023.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
  • The Rotary Club of Perth’s PolioPlus dinner will be held on World Polio Day, Tuesday, 24 October, at the Parmelia Hilton. The cost is $90. Please click or cut and paste the Trybooking link here https://www.trybooking.com/CLASV. There is no meeting on Monday 23 October, please consider attending this dinner in its stead.
  • The Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner event will be held on Saturday, 28 October. Enough hosts have offered their houses, and now more guests are needed. Please contact Hugh Stowell to express interest.
  • Anthony McGrath thanked the eight volunteers who went to Foodbank on Thursday.
  • Anthony said there would be a community services meeting shortly where more details of the Cans for Christmas campaign will be further planned.
  • John Murdoch reminded members that a Melbourne Cup Sweep will be held at the Club on the Monday evening before the Melbourne Cup. Please bring along cash, $10 and $20 sweeps will be available.
ROTARY MOMENTS:
  • Golf Day – City Rotary is organising the inaugural Rotary WA Golf Team Challenge at Gosnells on Friday, 20 October. Teams of four, Ambrose rules, $2,000 prize money for first place. Please refer to the email sent to all Club members on 2 October with details or the latest District newsletter.

SERGEANT SESSION: Jason van Straalen. A Jason Lite session, where the following members were fined:
  • Michael Bisset for attending two weeks in a row;
  • Geoff Cahif for being a bowling club triples champion, which Geoff said wasn’t correct, but he may have been being modest or trying to get out of the fine;
  • Steve Halbert for being in a bar fight;
  • Kevin Jackson for the longest drive on the golf course today and for winning;
  • Stephanie Fryer-Smith for wearing her name badge at home and forgetting to bring it tonight;
  • Neil Wilkie for saving heaps and getting bargain price cardiac surgery for June.

GUEST SPEAKER: Marlize Pretorius and Steve Jansz, YouthCARE – introduced by Ken Ilett

  • Marlize was in the South African Army for twelve years, she emigrated to Australia with her husband and two daughters and once the girls were at school she had a calling to become a Chaplain.
  • Through her work, Marlize was awarded the Pride in Workmanship prize at the Rotary Club of Rockingham in 2017 and was nominated by her school deputy principal.
  • YouthCARE is involved with over 600 public schools in Western Australia. The Chaplains provide pastoral care through the tenets of service, care, respect and compassion.
  • The Chaplains help school children with mental health issues, family problems, and physical needs, giving money for camps and excursions, clothing and shoes, and organising breakfast for thousands of students yearly.
  • Marlize is very creative and has organised many sessions for children to express themselves through art. She brought each Rotary member a heart that she had made with the inscription “Never forget the difference you make”.
  • The funding for Chaplains comes from the Federal Government, which pays for one and a half days of a Chaplain each week.
  • There is a minimum training requirement to become a Chaplain.
  • Thanks to Marlize and Steve for their presentation. The work of the Chaplain is certainly creating hope in the world.
