Correctly answered by Anthony McGrath, though his Latin accent left a bit to be desired.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
Hugh Stowell is sorry that he has missed some meetings but he was on a private tour of the White House.
Stephanie Fryer-Smith’s son had his first child, a boy, Mateo Fryer-
Smith, on 17 September 2023, a fourth grandson for Stephanie.
Jill Elias reported that their eldest son, Sam, in his final year of paramedicine, returned yesterday after seven weeks in England. Sam had won a Don Watt scholarship at Curtin University which enabled him to be a student at the Essex and Harts Air Ambulance Service.
Emanuel Radici, who has gone to Lincoln College at Oxford University to read Law, and to whom the Club donated some funds, has departed on his adventure and attended the University Open Day on Friday. When here at the Club at the end of August, he had not been given any pre-reading but just before he departed, he was told of three legal assignments due on 1 October, before he even starts his course.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Hugh Stowell advised the meeting of the Rotary Club of Perth’s PolioPlus dinner, to be held on World Polio Day, Tuesday 24 October, at the Parmelia Hilton, the cost is $90. Hugh hopes that Dalkeith will have at least one table at the dinner. Please contact Hugh if interested in attending.
Hugh also advertised the Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner event on Saturday 28 October. There are enough hosts who have offered their houses and now more guests are needed. Please contact Hugh to express interest.
ROTARY MOMENTS:
World Polio Day – As a Club, we have a commitment to contribute funds to the Rotary International polio fight. Please donate at least the equivalent of a dinner fee towards this cause, to the project account. There is no meeting next week on 25 September, as it is a public holiday, please consider donating the dinner fee from this date towards the project. A number of very generous donations have been received already, thank you to those donors.
MetSO concert – A wonderful concert was held on Sunday at Churchlands Senior High School. A 13 year old prodigy played her 18th century violin and her own Baroque-style composition. Rotary Club of Dalkeith members may receive a 10% discount for MetSO concerts, the discount code is “METSO10” when booking through Humantix.
SERGEANT SESSION:
Special Guest Sergeant Graeme Sansom, ably assisted by Corporal Kim Smith, dispensed the following fines:
Peter Marfleet for being in Rotary for 42 years;
Ann Bray for playing her violin;

Nigel Johnson for his fashionable statement jumper, probably purchased in Austria or other exotic locales;

GUEST SPEAKER: Ann Bray, Life Talk – introduced by Tony Chien
Ann Bray is a musician and works in the information technology field.
Ann is the youngest of five and was brought up in Adelaide. A good part of her upbringing was by her grandfather, Fred, a WWI veteran, and her grandmother, Vera. Her father, Jack, a WWII veteran stationed in Darwin during the bombings, and mother, Vera, were hard-working and gave much volunteering service in the community.
All of Ann’s family put service above self and she considers that she was surrounded by good and kind men, who did not discriminate and, after seeing the atrocities of war, wanted nothing more than peace in the world.
Men’s mental health is an important area to Ann.
Ann is the President of MetSO, which has 120 members across four orchestras. The orchestras are important for making music but also as a mental health resource and outlet.
Her sister is a psychiatrist and identified that Ann would be good in the information technology field. Ann’s first job was with British Aerospace in defence and she developed human interface equipment and did very well.
Ann has been married to Igor for 40 years and they have two sons, Sam and Alex.
Ann finished her presentation by playing an evocative piece on her violin.
