The meeting opened with the National Anthem sung to the accompaniment of Ann Bray on her violin. We sang beautifully!
QUESTION OF THE WEEK: The word rhinoceros comes originally from the Greek rhinokerōs, which is the combination of which two words?
Answer: From the Greek, rhin is 'nose’, and keras is ‘horn’, therefore meaning nose horn.

• Jonas Edner – Jonas has been hospitalised with a ruptured appendix; he is not taking messages or visitors yet, but President Hugh will keep us updated with news of his health. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Jonas.

• John Murdoch – John has been nominated and is a finalist for the National Official of the Year award for the 2024 Rower of the Year Awards and will travel to the Gold Coast in November for the awards ceremony. Congratulations to John.

• The Ballet – You will have received an email about attending the ballet. Kevin Jackson has organised for members to see ‘Sleeping Beauty’ on Thursday 5 December at 7:30 pm. • The Post—Thanks to Jason van Straalen for getting an article into The Post again. This time, it is about the business lunch and its success.

SERGEANT SESSION: T he Sergeant fined the following members:
· John Bolto for buying a Ford Everest, the car of choice for CFEMU members;
· Jill Elias for having a letter in The West;
· Ron Wilson for being a nice guy;
· President Hugh for sending Bruce deaf last week revving his car up after the meeting;
· Everyone who booed the Stand-in Sergeant last week – apparently no one.
GUEST SPEAKER: Suzanne Pekin – introduced by Richard Ranshaw:

· Suzanne has been the principal of Dalkeith Primary School since 2015. The school has 360 students.
· Suzanne’s passion for teaching started at a very young age. She grew up in Kalgoorlie and received an offer from Churchlands Teachers College, which she deferred to work in a bank for a year. After a year, she moved to Perth to obtain her diploma in teaching.
· Suzanne has moved around Western Australia with her husband’s job and had their three children at Collie, where she also taught. Her first role as a principal was in Kambalda.
· Suzanne has a passion for pedagogy and literacy. She advocates creative and critical thinking over rote learning. She engages the students in becoming adept at multistep problem solving, skills they will require throughout their lives.
· As the Dalkeith principal, Suzanne must always use extensive management skills; her reach is over anything to do with the school. A difference she has found over the years is that the use of data is much more relied upon and readily available.
· Thanks to Suzanne for discussing her teaching career and school.
