Guest Speaker: Vicki Rasmussen - Director of Sir Charles Gairdner Foundation for Research
Pres John introduced Vicki to the first Rotary Zoom meeting and thanked her for embracing a new way of doing things.
Salient points from Vicki’s talk are detailed below;
- The Foundation supports research work being done at “Charlies” hospital.
- Vicki first mentioned that we should all think of and give thanks to all the workers in our health care system at the moment under very difficult times. This includes the skilled ICU doctors, nurses and continues to the exceptional cleaning staff who are keeping the hospital shiny. They are all doing a great job.
- Research that has been done with the support of the Foundation have all had a very positive impact on the health of our Community.
- The Hospital in particular and the medical research being done is at the forefront within the world.
- Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is having a very positive impact on health outcomes and is a leader in particular in Neurosurgery and liver transplants.
- They treat approx 0.5 mils West Australians per year.
- The Foundation exists as the main fundraising arm to increase the amount of life-saving research being done.
- They provide around $1 mil of funding per year.
- They live by four key values; 1) Appreciation, researches and donors 2) Innovation 3) Community- all getting better together & 4) Accountability & transparency.
- In the current environment, they are supporting a Statewide response to COVID 19. Looking at what is the best way to move forward.
- Things have needed to move swiftly hence all sorts of different teams and organisations have bonded together.
- WA is a little better off because of its isolation.
- Specifically, they will be getting accurate data and samples of the disease for study particularly to nut out the best way to treat patients. Also, there will be further longer-term community-based research works.
- Currently, clinical trials are being conducted (animal models) for likely good treatments. A few good prospects are in train.
- In this time it is comforting to know that all WA research teams are working and sharing information together in real-time.
- It's not a quick fix but all of what is being done will have a long term benefit.
- In the interim - Social Distancing and wash your hands!
- Please consider donating to the Charlies Foundation for Research they are making a vital impact on the health of our WA Community.
Pres John thanked Vicki for her informative and interesting talk particularly the use of new technology.
