President John Bolto welcomed Rotarians and our guest speaker to another Club Zoom meeting due to the lock-down provisions of the current pandemic.
He hoped we all had a great Mother’s Day celebration with our wives, Mothers or whoever.
Pres John shared photos of the ANZAC commemoration wreath which amazingly still looks good after a fortnight. Richard will especially thank Lizzie Bee for doing such a great job (plus a fruit cake – of course)!
We have had a number of great comments on last week’s talk by Prof Peter Veth. Many want to get him back in more normal times.
Also, note that a new version of Zoom (5.0) is available with enhanced security features amongst others.

Guest Speaker: (Rotary Club of Dalkeith Member - Maheswary Pushpaligam, Life Talk)
Pres John introduced Mahes so that she can let us know a little more about herself.
Mahes has many facets to her life but there are a couple which she felt were pertinent;
- She goes out of her way to hold onto friends
- Likes to verify any statements that are made
Her father was a businessman in the medical products field. He had many good friends. Her origin is from Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). In her early years, her family went from Sri Lanka to live in Malaysia to ensure a better future for the family. They settled in an area in Malaysia renowned for great vegetarian dishes and Tin Mining. Mahes was born in this area. She is the youngest of eight children. The Tin Mining operations are owned by the Government due to the large capital expenditure required for the mining as well as the restoration processes. Following the mining operations, the Government got the market gardeners to crow crops over the area requiring rehabilitation.
Mahes was educated in this area in the local Methodist School eventually becoming a teacher. In the school, she specialised in music (classical violin) and dance (classical Indian).
Her education has resulted in many certificates, such as;
- Teaching Skills 2006
- Paul Harris Fellow
- Teaching English in Schools
- Language Training in High Schools
In 1981 she left Malaysia with her family to pursue better educational opportunities for her two young Sons. They settled in Perth. It has obviously worked as the oldest Son is marries and working as a Medical Doctor in Busselton. The younger son is also married and working as a Pharmacist in Perth.
She has 5 Grandchildren all in Perth ranging in age from 13 years old to 3 years old. They have very much enjoyed living in Perth and Australia.
Members expressed their thanks for Mahes giving a little insight into her life. Tony Chien wanted a good vegetarian Malaysian recipe.
Pres John Thanked Mahes for her Life Talk. Thank You.
