Guest Speaker: Graham Peden - District Governor 9455

Graham was introduced by Pres John Bolto.
Graham started by acknowledging the traditional owners and thought this was an appropriate Rotary thing to do.
Graham recently attended San Diego RI Conference for DGs from all around the world.  His talk was about what the current RI President Mark Maloney hope, wishes and challenges all Rotary club and Rotarians to consider and to put into place.
Mark Maloney’s vision statement includes;
  • Unite to make lasting change
  • Get back to TALKING within your local Communities.
  • To connect the World by acting on Rotaries 6 areas of Focus. The most important one being the END Polio Now campaign which is getting very close to completion.
On this last point, The Rotary Club of Dalkeith was awarded a certificate for its fantastic support for the End Polio Now campaign.  Accepted on behalf of the Club by PP David Ellis.  It was noted that we need to keep up this fight until the end!
Other Points by Mark Maloney were;
  • RI looking at making The Environment the 7th area of Focus to attract younger members.
  • Noted that Presidential Citations are an annual health check for Rotary Clubs.
  • Ensure you register on the My Rotary website - Just do It!
  • Acknowledges that a Rotary membership is a commitment of time and this needs to be done with fitting a work/life balance.
  • Business Networking is still a great idea.
  • Enticing young people into Rotary is still difficult.
  • WA is quite successful in terms of % of population membership of Rotary.
  • Need to take risks
  • Willingness to embrace new ideas.
Graham then talked about the WA Districts supporting the Greenbach Foundation.  Harness this project to get schools and kids interested.  Clubs also need to consider working with other organisations such as SVDP, Salvos and St Barts for instance.  Rotary needs to open up and tell their stories, let people know we enjoy our fun and fellowship.

Going forward the District’s Strategic Plan consists of the following;
  • People love fellowship
  • Sell the integrity of the organisation
  • Diversity is important
  • Areas of service, engage all people
  • Rotary gives leadership opportunities
  • Peace is important
  • Different Clubs can exist
  • Connect to the community
  • Social Media – ensure your accounts are updated 4 x per Month
 Graham quoted Charles Darwin in that it’s NOT the survival of the fittest but the survival of what is most adaptable!
Pres John Bolto thanked the DG Graham Peden for bringing us up to date.
