Peter Panek informed us that his son (30 y old) has just opened a cafe in the Claremont Bowls Club. Peter also thanked all the 11 volunteers who assisted with the Super Sunday Bike Count yesterday. Expected to raise about $1400 for the Club,

Fines meted out by our Sergeant included: All those who did not assist with the Bike Count yesterday, The Guest Speaker for winning $10,000 on a scratchie some years ago, Bob Davis for winning the Endeavour Race at RPYC recently, and The Wine Table.
Introduction of GUEST SPEAKER:
John Hopkins noted Peter’s great contributions to the legal profession and his service on various Boards and, in particular, his support for the Veterans Association. Peter fought in the Vietnam War for 6 years with the SAS, served in Special Operations Command from Canberra, as well as serving in Afghanistan and in the Gulf War. He also noted the award of an OAM in June 2018 and an OA Military Division in 1984. His topic tonight is “An Insiders Perspective on the SAS”.
GUEST SPEAKER: Peter Fitzpatrick AO - The SAS - An insider’s perspective.
Peter spoke about the Brereton Report (appointed 2018 and report published in 2020) on the operations of the SAS in Afghanistan, and about the families and children who suffered as a consequence of this report and the media exposure. His view was that there were no identified issues that were proved, and no proof positive of wrongdoing...a few bad eggs but no proof. He was critical of the way the Government and the Department of Defence handled the Report. His view was that the Regiment was still in very good shape, despite the problems, and reminded us that “Justice Delayed is often Justice Denied”.
Pres Jason thanked Peter Fitzsimons for his interesting and informative talk and presented him with the usual Rotary Cake and copy of the latest Rotary Down Under Magazine.
