President opened the meeting at 6.29 pm with a rousing singing of Advance Australia Fair. Unfortunately, without John Thornton’s lead in key, the song was a bit flat scoring only 7/10.

Correctly answered by Tony Chien who was assisted by John Bolto who could only remember one half of the answer.

Peter reminded members of the upcoming Guess Who is Coming to Dinner event on Saturday 26th September. Members were reminded that they would be expected to bring either an entrée or Desert or nibbles plus the obligatory bottle of wine. Details of which dish you are to prepare will be forwarded to you in due course. This will be followed with the details of your allocated venue which will be advised to you by email on the 26th.

The Book Drive is closing and has achieved approximately 500kgs of books which will be sent to PNG. Michael needs to find a transport company who can assist with transporting the books to Sydney and has asked all members to check their contacts to see if they can assist with locating a Transport company for this task.
Michael also requires Wine boxes in which to pack the books and is happy to collect from Members homes if you have any available.
Tony Chien advised that he is working with and supporting Metso and their upcoming concert on Sunday 6th September is a sell-out.

Kevin advised that the recent visit to Foodbank was a great success and that President Anthony would provide more feedback.
Kevin has organised another visit to Foodbank for Members and their wives for 7th October for a 1-hour tour followed by a pub lunch at the Rose and Crown in Guilford. Please let Kevin know if you wish to attend.

Craig James is still the current overall leader by 2 from David Ellis. John Hopkins is making a late run towards the top but don’t feel any pressure, Craig.
PRESIDENTS REPORT: ( Pres Anthony McGrath)
A couple of items;
- We had a very good visit to Foodbank with 16 people. We were made very welcome and had a great meal as well as understood their organisation which provides an amazing service to West Australians.
- I attended our Cluster meeting of close-by Clubs last Thursday. It was interesting to find out what all the other clubs are doing. Make no mistake we are very much doing a lot of worthwhile projects in these difficult times and it is good that we have at least one project which we are doing in conjunction with other Clubs (Cans for Xmas).
- I note that Rotary turns 100 years Old in Australia this Rotary year – April 2021. Hence a few celebrations will be happening and I will bring them to your attention in due course.

Peter Panek, for completing his first woodturning project at the Shed and then again for not providing a parking bay at the Men’s Shed for the Shed President, who is tonight’s Guest speaker.
GUEST SPEAKER: ( Mr Mike Wiggin – President of the Showgrounds Community Men’s Shed.)

The speaker was introduced by Trevor Gorey. Trevor noted that he has known Mike for several years and that it is his great pleasure to introduce Mike this evening. Mike Has been a member of the WA Mens Shed Association Committee for several years and was appointed as their Development Officer and has undertaken a lot of work in promoting and establishing Mens Sheds.
Mike is one of the finest woodwork craftsmen that Trevor has seen. He is a great trainer and mentor and an asset to any Shed. Mike made the decision to relocate from Mt Claremont to the Claremont Oval precinct and so will be able to walk to the Shed once fully resettled.
Mike Wiggin provided a brief history of Mens Shed which noted the following;

- Men’s Sheds are an Australian Invention, first Shed opened sometime around 1995 – with Lane Cove in NSW possibly being the location of the first shed

- First WA Shed in 2003
- Sheds now in New Zealand, UK, Ireland, Canada, Norway, Finland USA and still spreading
- Limited State and Federal funding
- Great support from most Shire and City Councils
- Age profile is falling due to
- FIFO workers joining Sheds while at home
- Self-employed professionals and tradies
- Better Men’s Shed marketing to younger demographic
- Growth slowing as coverage of the State increases
- Currently, in WA, 190 Sheds are operational with a few more developing in WA
- There are over 1000 Sheds Australia wide.
- More Sheds in Australia than McDonald’s outlets
- WA is estimated to have over 8,000 Shedders, Australia has +130,000
Why a Community Men’s Shed
A Shed is a community project aimed at:
- Fostering
- Maintaining and
- Expanding
Men’s health as well as educational, social networks and community links.
Sheds foster learning through engagement and inclusivity.
Most Men’s Sheds are men only, but some have women members
Mike emphasised that Shed’s provide a vital service in regard to Men's mental health whilst being cleverly disguised as a Men's Shed.
The Showgrounds Community Men’s Shed History
- Rotary wants a Men’s Shed in Nedlands or Claremont area
- Dalkeith Rotary Club was the main driving force behind the establishment of a Shed in the area
- It took over 4 years to obtain a suitable site, with much valuable work lost trying to obtain a site at the Sunset Hospital area. Once this location was abandoned the project moved quickly over the following 2 years
- RAS welcomes us
- There was considerable planning and fundraising starring Trevor Gorey et al
- The cleaning and site preparation with lots of founding members involved
- Then we saw Peter Panek starring is his role as project manager
- Following completion, we’ve filled the building
- We’re encroaching on the Showgrounds having taken over the garden area and established a fenced area for Beekeeping outside of our original footprint
- We’ve run out of room
- We received huge support from the local Rotary Clubs ($125k in all)
- Huge support from our Patron, Mr Michael Chaney AO ($50k), both financially and lobbying
- Funding from State Govt Sources including Lotterywest $120k for the Main heavy equipment workshop including the dust suppression system originally salvaged from the Princess Margret Hospital site. Also contributing was the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (previously Racing and Gaming) who contributed $125k for offices, meeting rooms, kitchen and our disabled and unisex toilet.

- Our various groups consist of
- Woodwork, obviously
- Photography, very strongly supported by our members
- Cooking group, providing support for the Shed and various functions at the Shed
- Wine Appreciation, our most popular and largest group
- Gardening, a very active and enthusiastic group
- Electronics, a small but committed group
- Computing support, providing a valuable service to our members and the community
- Bee Keeping, a start-up group who will have their first hive within weeks
- Wood Turning, a newly established group
- Bicycle salvage, repair, and donation to the charity Bicycles for Humanity
A successful Shed goes where its members want to go and the growth in our Shed activities indicated we are a very successful Shed with approximately 150 members. We are expecting 200 members by Christmas this year.
Pres Anthony thanked Mike for an informative and entertaining talk and reminded Rotarians that we will have a night of Fellowship at the Shed on Monday 21st September.
