Bicycles for Humanity WA
The Charitable Trust recently donated $12,000 to Bicycles for Humanity WA, which will fund the cost of sending a container of bicycles to Africa.
A letter from Patrick Maingard, Chair of Bicycles for Humanity WA, has been received. He has asked that it be shared with Club members:
I write to express my sincere thanks for the generous donation to our charity. On behalf of our board and volunteers, we express our gratitude for the ongoing relationship with the Rotary organisation in general and the Rotary Club of Dalkeith in particular.
As you are already aware of the work being done by our volunteers, I am pleased to advise that your contribution will go a long way to funding another container into Africa. We have set ourselves a goal to expand our footprint and are working on new projects that will extend our reach to those disadvantaged communities that need our help. Your donation helps ensure that this is achieved.
Once again, thank you for the donation. It is much appreciated.

INDUCTION OF BARBARA NORTH
President Leon
Today we are honoured to induct Barbara North as a new member into the Rotary Club of Dalkeith.
John Murdoch – Biography of Barbara North
Barbara grew up in Cottesloe, attending North Cottesloe Primary School and then Swanbourne Senior High School.
She met her husband, John, in London while on a working holiday. They married, and John, a civil engineer with Pioneer Concrete, was transferred to Spain for four years. They lived in Alicante and had two children, Johanna and Andrew.
The next move was to Houston, where a third child, Diana, was born.
On their return home, they settled in City Beach, where Barbara still resides.
When the children started school, Barbara commenced work again, initially at Scarborough Senior High School and then, in 2000, as Registrar at Nedlands Primary School, where she worked until she retired.
Sadly, John suffered a very serious stroke in 2012, anBd Barbara became his carer until his death earlier this year.
Barbara's eldest daughter was a Rotary Exchange Student to Sweden in 1993, and the family has also billeted Rotary students.
Barbara wants to continue contributing to the community and has chosen Rotary as the vehicle through which to do so.
President Leon
Barbara North, would you please come forward.
Barbara, welcome to Rotary!
You have been chosen for membership in the Rotary Club of Dalkeith because your fellow members believe you to be a leader in your vocation and community. While membership in Rotary is an honour and privilege, it involves corresponding obligations.
One of the great privileges of Rotary is fellowship and the mutual confidence which it inspires. Therefore, we commit ourselves to doing our part to make you feel welcome. In return, we expect that you will share the responsibility for the development of closer personal relationships, which will be to our mutual benefit.
Rotarians must constantly keep before them the primary object of Rotary.
“Service Above Self” is our motto, and Rotary expects each member to live up to this ideal.
You must live by the Four-Way Test:
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendship?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
If you live by those rules, you will not go wrong.
The community will know and judge Rotary through your example in character and service, and we accept you as a member because we believe the principles and objects of Rotary will be safe in your keeping.
We know that we will receive much from you in help and service, which will enable us to be better Rotarians, and we most heartily offer you the right hand of Rotary fellowship.
I now declare you to be a member of the Rotary Club of Dalkeith.
Fellow Rotarians, please stand. I present to you our newest member, Barbara North.

SPEAKERS
HUGH STOWELL • LINDSAY DRY • JILL ELIAS
Past President Hugh Stowell – Quiz Night
Past PresidentHugh Stowell spoke about suggesting and organising the inaugural Quiz Night in 2025, and again this year.
He wanted an event that:
raised money for worthwhile causes;
encouraged high member participation;
introduced friends to Rotary;
spread the word about Rotary;
had minimal overheads; and
was fun!
Hugh organised all aspects of the Quiz Nights, including finding David Goode, the excellent quizmaster, whose $500 fee is donated to another Rotary Club for its charitable works.
Hugh was also responsible for sourcing very good prizes for the winners' table and the raffle.
In 2025, the $6,200 profit from the Quiz Night went to Grandcarers WA.
This year, with matching support from the Charitable Trust, the sum of $10,000 was donated to the John Fawcett Foundation in memory of Win Jones OAM.
Well done to Hugh for the Quiz Nights and the extraordinary amounts raised in one evening.
Past President Lindsay Dry spoke about Grandcarers WA.
In Perth, there are five branches, and another branch opened last year in York.
Many grandparent carers are living on or near the poverty line, as many are on fixed incomes. There is also an expense involved in applying to the courts to gain custody of their grandchildren. This adds to the financial burden of taking on their grandchildren – something they willingly do – but they need assistance to raise them.
Lindsay has organised a clothing drive already this year and will soon ask for contributions of toothbrushes and toothpaste for the grandchildren.
Past President Jill Elias – Christmas Toy Drive
Past President Jill Elias spoke about organising a toy drive at Christmas each year for the grandchildren.
With the help of Toy World in Claremont, Club members have been offered discounts on toys purchased there.
The Charitable Trust earlier this year donated $10,000 to ten children leaving primary school to attend high school, helping with expenses such as uniforms, laptops, books and other educational costs.
The Club has donated funds to Grandcarers WA this year, as well as groceries, gift cards and many good-quality recycled items.
The Club also donates fruit cakes at Christmas time, and Richard Ranshaw generously donates a box himself.
