FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
Peter Panek and Jomay Verrier – Craig James reported that Peter and Jomay were involved in helping someone who had collapsed in their street. Another person already there giving first aid called an ambulance and said that the patient was now with an old couple! Peter and Jomay did not know to whom he referred. Well done to Peter and Jomay for helping the person in need and to the other first aider, who should have gone to SpecSavers.
CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
• Pocket forests – John Bolto reported that a few members had visited a pocket forest at Padbury last week. It was a wonderful example of what can grow in small spaces and John is contacting Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital about maintaining a pocket garden there.
• Business lunch – John Bolto reported that six tables had been sold for the business lunch so far. The business lunch will be held on Thursday 20 November 2025 at noon at the Royal Perth Golf Club in South Perth. Please organise your tables as soon as possible through John Bolto, or come along alone or with a friend, you do not need to organise a whole table.
• Bicycle Count – Peter Panek has a number of vacancies for the bicycle count on the morning of Sunday, 9 November. Please get in contact with Ol’ Pete to sign up for this worthwhile volunteering. The Club is given funds for each manned site.
• Men’s Shed – Peter Panek reported that even though numbers were down attending the Royal Show generally and visitors to the Men’s Shed specifically, the Men’s Shed made a much larger profit than in previous years.
• Club Services – Craig James reported that under its Vocational Services umbrella, Club Services will be offering some vocational visits. Straw polls were taken, and an email asking for interest will be sent out shortly. Also, members are asked to think about possible recipients for the Pride in Workmanship and Excellence Awards.

The Post – Well done to Jason for another article published in The Post, this time about Club members volunteering on Daffodil Day for the Cancer Council.

• World Polio Day – World Polio Day is Friday, 24 October 2025. The Rotary Club of Perth is holding a dinner at the Royal Perth Golf Club that evening, 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. Nigel Johnson for being an apology tonight because he had a Men’s Shed event on, but that was last night, so he turned up to dinner.

GUEST SPEAKERS:
Thomas Barnes – introduced by John Lindquist
Thomas attended the RYPEN camp in May. He is grateful for the opportunities afforded to him to be able to attend.
He was interested that leaders developed over the weekend, and they did not necessarily come from the loudest person in the room, but emerged from those taking action.
Thomas’ eyes were opened to the conditions of some other students’ schooling, and it was confronting to realise that one student from down south would like to study medicine at university, but he cannot take chemistry as a subject as his school does not have a laboratory.
Thomas mentioned two highlights from the weekend, being the activity of blindfolded box stacking and playing Zombie Apocalypse.
Thomas thanked the Club for sponsoring him to attend.
Anthony Pearce – introduced by Anita Bourke
Anthony attended RYLA three years ago, and he will be the head facilitator of eight facilitators for the RYLA camp in January 2026.
So far, the camp has 15 applicants, and he would like Dalkeith members to spread the word for more campers to attend.
The camp is open to 18 to 28-year-olds, and the main aims of the camp are to strengthen communication, set up conflict resolution and to develop leadership through self-awareness.
Claire Hazelwood – introduced by John Lindquist
Claire is undertaking a Master’s Degree in breastfeeding practices in Uganda. She visited Uganda in June and July of this year.
She was based at two health centres, at Kasangati Health Care Centre and Buwambo Heath Care Centre, outside of Kampala and she interviewed nursing mothers on their experiences. The conditions were primitive and much information given to nursing mothers and the practices were outdated and could be dangerous to infants, for example, new mothers being told that their milk would not come in for a while so the baby is fed tea with sugar when firstborn which can interfere with their guts.
Claire found many uneven practices and said that understanding the environment is critical to change. Some mothers who do not produce enough milk are told to eat more, when all they have available to them is one meal of porridge a day.
Claire thanked the Club for its donation of funds towards her study.
