Ian was introduced by Bob Davis. He explained how Ian had given 38 years of service to the WA Museum, and had been made a Fellow.
|
|
Ian explained that his usual 45-minute presentation would be reduced to meet the evening’s schedule.
There is money in decay, once you work out how to save material.
-In Chuuk Lagoon (also known as Truk) there are 47 World War 2 ships, in various conditions.
-The Batavia wrecked in 1629, and the subsequent story is well known. Recovered water-logged timbers must be kept wet. Some timbers have been identified as originating from Poland from the 1300s. Spanish coins dated 1568 were determined to be forgeries.
-The wreck of the Rapid near Point Cloates/Ningaloo Station has yielded 28,642 coins. Examination of the timbers has given indications of climate change.
-HMS Sirius sank at Norfolk Island in 1790. The location of the wreck was established by using a sketch of the sinking by a shipwrecked artist. The ship’s anchor was recovered during the 1988 Bicentennial. Ian explained the process of pre-treating metal cannon before removing from the water.
-Examination of the wreck of the Xantho near Port Gregory showed that the sea bed can rise/fall 2 to 3 metres.
-Ian’s conservation work also involved the preservation of a 5.3-metre megamouth shark.
-From the wreck of HMS Pandora (1791) in the Torres Strait, a pocket watch belonging to the ship’s surgeon was recovered. In 1990 this watch was restored to working order. This watch is believed to have been used by the surgeon in his study of the relationship between pulse, body temperature and general health. His findings were the first known to be published.
Ian answered topical questions from members.
