  • Richard Ranshaw and Jonas Edner for whingeing that they did not have playing cards on their table for two and could have won but were denied the opportunity.

GUEST SPEAKER: Geoff Hick Introduced by Peter Panek:

  • The Flight of the Wild Geese memorial commemorates the escape of six Irish Fenian prisoners.
  • In 1865 the Fenian movement was begun in Ireland to defeat the British. There was an uprising in 1867, and due to informers in the ranks, the Fenians were defeated.
  • As a result, The Hougoumont, which was the last ship to bring convicts to Australia, brought 62 Fenian prisoners to Western Australia and docked at Fremantle in 1868.
  • In 1869, one of the Fenian prisoners, John Boyle O`Reilly, escaped from a gang building the road between Bunbury and Busselton and got away to America. On O`Reilly`s recommendation, the ship Catalpa was purchased and refitted to mount a rescue operation.
  • Arrangements had to be made for agents to travel from the United States to Fremantle, to enable them to spend several months preparing for the escape of six Fenian prisoners, which took place from Rockingham Beach on Easter Monday, 17 April 1876.
  • The fugitives and their rescuers were pursued by the water police in their sailing cutter and by the armed pensioner guards in the steamer Georgette, which fired her cannon at the Catalpa eliciting Captain Anthony`s famous response: "That`s the American flag. I am on the high seas. My flag protects me. If you fire on this ship, you fire on the American flag."
  • The Catalpa made it to the United States of America and the story has been brought to life in movies, songs, books and poems and is a celebrated tale.
