Guest Speaker: Jacqui Gilmour - St Yared’s School Ethiopia

John Murdoch introduced Jacqui.  Noting that their children attended the same school in North Cott Primary.  She is a lady with great compassion.
Jacqui originally travelled extensively through Africa as a young woman in 1978.  She spent a lot of time in Ethiopia even though there was a civil war going on.  She noted that they were very far behind the rest of Africa especially since there was also a famine at that stage.
She thought she could do things better and assist particularly with AIDS education.
The biggest thing that they say they need is access to quality education.  As such, she has started St Yared’s School.  It educates children from very poor families. Currently around 300 children.  They are getting remarkable results.  Recently benchmarked in the National Exams her students are in the top 1%.  They put a lot of work into educating the Teachers.  Her other reason for the success is that they are 100% supported by their local strong community.
In the near future, she has a meeting with the Ethiopian President.  Looking to get some land for a 1000 student school.  The President is a good person and keen to get a good education for his people.
Jacqui showed a video of the current school and its children.

Pres John Bolto thanked Jacqui for her talk and her inspirational work with the St Yared’s School.
