Welcome to our guest speaker, District Governor Veronica Lawrance and guest, Di Wilcox.

The meeting was opened by singing the National Anthem.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Uganda is a landlocked country. Which countries border Uganda, and where?

Answer: Uganda is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by South Sudan, to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the south-west by Rwanda and to the south by Tanzania.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS:

· Rotary Club of Margaret River – Steve Halbert attended a Rotary Club of Margaret River meeting last week and found it illuminating in its practices. It is different to our Club in interesting ways.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:

• Business lunch – The business lunch will be held on Thursday, 20 November 2025, at noon at the Royal Perth Golf Club in South Perth. Please organise your tables as soon as possible through John Bolto, or come along alone or with a friend; you do not need to organise a whole table. John’s email is rj.bolto@gmail.com

Bicycle Count – Peter Panek has seven vacancies for the bicycle count on the morning of Sunday, 9 November. Please get in contact with Pete to sign up for this worthwhile volunteering. The Club is given $120 for each manned site. Peter’s email is ppanek@merit-group.com.au

• ‘Cinderella’ – Please let Craig James, craig.james50@outlook.com, or Kevin Jackson, kevinjj44@hotmail.com, know before the end of Wednesday, 15 October, if you are able to attend the ballet Cinderella on Friday, 5 December 2025, at His Majesty’s Theatre. Tickets are $159 and limited to 20 Club members and partners.

Fruit cakes and puddings – Richard Ranshaw has fruit cakes and puddings available, $25 per cake or pudding, please email Richard with your order on richard@ranshaw.com.au before they sell out like, well, hot cakes!

ROTARY MOMENTS:

Polio Fund – As requested, please contribute the equivalent of the dinner amount of $45 to the project account towards the eradication of polio. Please put your name and ‘polio’ in the description line.

World Polio Day – World Polio Day is Friday, 24 October 2025. The Rotary Club of Perth is holding a dinner at the Royal Perth Golf Club that evening, 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. The cost is $65 per person, which includes a buffet dinner, pudding, tea and coffee with a cash bar available. The Trybooking site is https://www.trybooking.com/DFTVX

SERGEANT JASON SESSION: The following members were fined by Sergeant Jason:

· Ken Ilett for winning at golf by such a big margin;

· Kent Warburton for his bowling prowess, which kept being hushed up but is now in the open;

· Hugh Stowell for getting that rock star parking space again;

· Bruce Fiegert for featuring in the Post again for his high-performance bowling, again.

· Bob Davis for his write-up on radio-controlled sailing yachts;

· Susan Watson and Jill Elias for neither of them being published this week, poor form.

GUEST SPEAKER Veronica Lawrance - introduced by President Jonas

Veronica is an undergraduate and postgraduate of Curtin University and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Public Relations), and has a Master of Philosophy (Public Relations) action research degree. She has extensive experience in public relations and communications in the non-profit, private, corporate and government sectors and she has worked for organisations such as HBF, the WA Football Commission and Presbyterian Ladies’ College. Veronica is a Justice of the Peace and Chair of SouthCare and was a local government councillor for the City of South Perth from 2010 to 2015. She has also served as a board member and Chair on Consumers of Mental Health WA and Advocare Inc.

· Veronica has held a number of Rotary roles which included as Club President from 2022 to 2024 at the Mill Point Rotary Club. She is in the role of District Governor for two years from 2025 to 2027.

· Veronica said to keep Rotary alive we need to re-imagine, re-engage and re-build it. Collaboration is key to increasing membership and we must build our public image and “futurise” Rotary. We should look to other organisation’s models to building successful Clubs.

· Veronica presented to Past President Hugh three certificates awarded from his presidential year, for Club Excellence, for supporting the Rotary Foundation and for the End Polio Now Campaign.
