President Anthony McGrath opened the meeting at 6.30 pm on 10 May 2021.
John Thornton (OAM) led the singing of a rousing chorus of Advance Australia Fair. The Club members still sing the old version “for we are young and free” Versus the new version “…for we are One and Free”, but then old habits die hard. The rousing chorus scored a comfortable 7.5/10.

We welcome Mr Steve Rogers as our Guest Speaker tonight who will speak to us about his conversion to a late-stage author.

Science and Engineering Challenge is on next week. Richard Gorham requested 6 volunteers help out on Saturday from 2:00 pm and several members stepped up to help. Additional volunteers are required on Tuesday and Friday afternoon and so if you can help, please advise Michael Bissett, who is coordinating the volunteers for the event.

SERGEANT’S SESSION: with Sergeant Trevor Gorey and Corporal Richard Ranshaw
Fines were levied on the following culprits.
- The Wine Table.
- Footy Tipping Winner – John Bolto – 2 fines, one for his son winning the round and one for him leading the competition.
- Kent Warburton – Mad keen Docker’s supporter who won’t tip them in the competition.
- Peter Panek- because his wife appeared in an article in the Post newspaper reporting on her volunteering work at Hollywood hospital. Just goes to prove the old saying “No good turn goes unpunished”.
- PEK Goh- because Pek might come out of retirement due to the very high demand for ENT specialists which has a 3-year waiting list.
- Leon Lorenzen – received an award for “Doctor of Letters’ because he has so many academic qualifications than is sensible.

GUEST SPEAKER: (Steve Rogers - A late-career change to author)
Pres Anthony asked Mike Snell to introduce Mr Steve Rogers to us.
Steve provided a very entertaining speech regarding his late-life conversion to becoming an author.
Steve advised that you are never too old or too young to start writing. Steve’s stories are character-driven and as an older writer, he has had years of experience in meeting with loads of characters.
There are fundamentally 3 rules to becoming a good writer. The problem is no one knows what they are.
Writing is like shoveling sand into a box and then building a castle with the contents.
The odds of being published are 1-2% and there are an estimated 600,000 – 1,000,000 books published every year.
Steve then proudly showed off his first Royalty Cheque which was for the grand sum of 10 pounds and 70 pence. He has not cashed it in yet because it would cost him more to do so at the bank so now it travels with him as a souvenir.
Finally, Steve advised that “It take an awfully long time to “not” write a book”.
Pres Anthony thanked Steve for his interesting & very entertaining talk.
