- Gary is the current President of Sailability WA and is a past Commodore of Royal Perth Yacht Club from 2000 to 2002. He was instrumental in starting the Sailability programme at RPYC in 2000.
- The theme of Sailability is ‘Freedom on the water regardless of ability’. Gary recounted many stories of people with various levels of ability becoming different people when given the opportunity to sail.
- The types of boats used are Hansa 303, Hansa Liberties and Keelboats. Sailability will start at Geraldton soon.
- Funding comes from grants (government and private), donations and fundraising events. Each August there is the Finding Freedom lunch to raise funds for Sailability at which the last lunch raised $94,000.
- Major international regattas have been held out of RPYC and Gary has been the Chair of the organising committee for them.
- The amount of work required for the programme is incredible, but the volunteers find it worthwhile.
- With the help of the Rotary Club of Dalkeith, a paid part-time coordinator manages the programme.
- Many thanks to Gary for his wonderful and inspirational work which is creating hope in the world.
