President Jason van Straalen opened the meeting at 6.30 pm.
   
John Thornton led us tonight in singing a chorus of Advance Australia Fair.
 
WELCOME to our SPEAKER and GUESTS:
President Jason welcomed Paul Higginbotham and Karen Hickling as our guest speakers this evening.
 
APOLOGIES & LOA:
With 13 Apologies and 9 LOA and 2 guests, we had 40 people in attendance tonight.  
 
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Question: What is Rotary’s monthly theme for May?
Answer: Youth Service.
 
FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
Nigel Johnson reported that he and his daughter went to the Eagles game on Friday night. He wore a mask and his daughter didn’t. She now has Covid.
Anita Bourke suggested that the Club could pay a rental bond to enable a Ukrainian family to gain entry to Australia.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Kevin Jackson reminded Nedlands Council residents that there is a Public Meeting this coming Saturday to discuss the development of the Tawarri site.
           
INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER:
John Bolto conducted the induction of our new member Martanki Mathew into Rotary and welcomed her to the Rotary Club of Dalkeith.
President Jason presented Martanki with her badge. Martanki will join the International Committee and was introduced to the Chair of that committee Michael Bisset.
All members welcomed Martanki into the Club.

  • Geoff Cahiff for suffering a bad loss at bowls.
  • David Ellis for missing cards on a table in tonight’s set-up.
  • Jon Steward – didn’t cover the footy results in the fines.
 
Introduction of GUEST SPEAKERS:
Tony Chien introduced our guest speakers Paul Higginbotham and Karen Hickling from Earbus Foundation of WA.
 
Paul Higginbotham commenced his presentation by explaining that Earbus had started its operations in 2013 and now had 121 sites across WA.
 
He provided an outline of the extent of the operation which mainly involved working with the Noongar people by indicating that the Noongar people occupied the land from south of the Pilbarra region to the very South of WA.
 
Last year Earbus provided services to 4908 aboriginal children.
 
Aboriginal children in the region have the worst ear complaints of all other areas in the world and the consequences of the loss of hearing were in the first five years where “ if you can’t hear-you can’t learn’
 
He explained the issues of poor hygiene and the levels of disease that is the highest in the world in the aboriginal communities.
 
Paul said that any support the Club could provide to assist in the delivery of services would be greatly appreciated.
 
President Jason thanked Paul for his interesting talk and presented him with a Rotary Fruit Cake.
