QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

President David spoke of attendances at recent Club events.
48 members attended the Anniversary Dinner, including 15 ‘newer’ members. But only 24 members supported the Wine Night, 6 being recent joiners. The visit to the Esther Foundation only attracted 16 of our more senior members.
The Esther Foundation would be grateful for donations of women’s clothing for stocking their shop.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Charitable Trust:
Russell Hawkins advised of a Board meeting tomorrow night. The end of the financial year is approaching, and tax benefits are available.
Limited supplies of Flying Fish wines are available.
Secretary:
Craig James presented a report on the recent Club Board meeting.
Disappointment with the low number of RDC members (17) who had attended the District Conference.
The Board considered Voiceworks Plus request for support, it was decided that the Club has no financial resources in this Year but can offer in-kind support.PM advised of the planned Parkinson Walk in the park as a potential RCD activity. 15 September 2019 at Perry Lakes. Volunteers and participants are required. PM will promote to the Club.
The Club received an invitation from RC Osborne Park
“We are raising the last 40 % of the funds ($175,000) required for a project in Leonora (Goldfields District) to reduce the number of children born with FASD (Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) and to minimise the long-term effect on children who have this disorder.”
The request was referred to the Community Services Committee which recommended against getting involved with FADS in this Rotary Year and in fact considered it was an issue that Australian Rotary Health should take responsibility for.
A majority of the Board considered that the issue was one that should be tackled at Rotary Club level.
It was noted
- the RC Osborne Park and RC Scarborough are strong supporters,
- that RCD has previously supported Dr Jim Fitzpatrick from Patches Paediatrics when running trials in the Fitzroy Valley.
The Board agreed that District 9455 should be encouraged to become involved with the project and, so, RCD.
It was noted that the Men’s Shed application to Lottery West for funding has hit some obstacles which TG is working through but that a grant application has recently been lodged with the Perron Foundation. The Board was heartened by the news that a “ribbon cutting” event should be possible before 30 June when the Men’s Shed will be operational to the extent that its members can commence setting it up.
RCD has been asked to support students from Kununurra to attend RYPEN 2019 and the Youth Committee is waiting for more details as there may be a need for contribution to airfares.
It was noted that “new blood” in the club had been responsible for raising over $250,000* from “non-traditional” sources so far, this Rotary Year. All agreed it was a bloody good effort and an endorsement for the need for continually infusing fresh enthusiasm into the Club.

Anthony advised the latest accounts have been posted on the Club website.

Bob Davis advised that the Handover Dinner will be held on 24th June.
Club stores are being re-arranged, and the low cabinet at the rear of the dining room is available to a good home.
Ian Ritchie is compiling and preserving, the Club’s history.

Steve Halbert apologised on behalf of Nigel, who will report next week.
Tim Humphrey advised that numbers attending the Wine Night were down, but compliments were received re the improved ambience, and good food. Thank you emails had been sent to contributors to the Silent Auction organised by Brad Noble. This raised about $5,000.
20 members and partners visited Esther Foundation’s new premises in Kalamunda. Very impressed with what was seen and heard. All equipment is new, as 110 loads were taken to the tip from their South Perth premises.

Membership and New Members:

Youth:
Farewell to Cadu, and his host parents will be on Monday 10th June.
Men’s Shed:
Trevor advised of a $100,000 donation from the Gaming Foundation (subject to Ministerial approval). This will be used for the meeting room and kitchen.
A Public Meeting will be held on-site on Wednesday 15th June 4 – 6 pm. Maximum attendance is requested as a show of strong support for the project.
Peter Panek advised that the building will be pressure-cleaned this Friday. The section of old bitumen floor will be replaced with a concrete slab. A working bee will be held next Monday and Tuesday from 9 am. Volunteers are requested.
