President Jason van Straalen opened the meeting at 6.30 PM.

John Thornton led us in singing a chorus of Advance Australia Fair.

 

The Speaker tonight is David Carter, CEO, Austal Fisheries, on the topic “Sustainable Fishing”.

President Jason advised that a number of past and present members of our Club had last week attended the funeral of Penny Langley, wife of member Tom Langley.

President’s Report: (Jason Van Straalen)

Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta says that polio eradication can be achieved if Rotary members stay committed.

World Polio Day is 24^th October.

Bill and Melinda Gates donate $3 for every $1 Rotary donates.

All members will be given an “Eradicate Polio Now“ badge.

Reminder to bring a potential Rotary member as a guest and you will both enjoy a free dinner – subject to Board approval tonight.

There will be a Board Meeting tonight at Leon’s office in Subiaco.

David Carter gave an excellent talk on his company, Austal Fisheries and Sustainable Fishing. David has been in the business for 44 yrs and is Perth based. The business has a revenue of $120M and is owned 50% by the Kailis family and 50% Maruha Nichirio Corporation.   Their North prawn fishery is based in Cairns where they have 52 trawlers fishing for prawns and concentrate on the continual reduction of bi-catch.   In Darwin, they fish for Snapper. Patagonian Toothfish is caught at around 2000m deep in the sub-Antarctic in the wintertime where they send 3 boats each with 30 crew. They work to a quota and fish in winter to avoid problems with sea birds.

The company works to assist in the elimination of illegal fishing.   Their business is carbon neutral and each year pay for the planting of 140,000 trees to achieve this. They also reduce the use of diesel fuel with new boat designs and have all their claims verified.   They believe that transparency builds trust which builds loyalty which builds a premium for their product.
