GUEST SPEAKER: Jodie Sparks, Rotary International Foundation Introduced by John Murdoch:

  • The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment and alleviating poverty.
  • The Foundation was started in 1917 with an initial contribution of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City. It has spent over US$4 billion to date on life-changing, sustainable projects.
  • The Foundation leads the way on worldwide Rotary campaigns such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Polio eradication is Rotary’s top philanthropic priority. Rotary launched the PolioPlus programme in 1985. In 1988, when Rotary began working with its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, there were more than 350,000 polio cases in over 125 countries. Since then, nearly three billion children have been immunised against polio and the incidence of polio has decreased by 99.9 percent. As of 2021, Rotary’s contributions to the global polio eradication effort, including matching funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, exceeded US$2 billion.
  • In 2002, the Foundation established the Peace Fellow Programme. Since then, seven Rotary Peace Centres have been established in Thailand, the USA, England, Japan, Australia, Uganda and Sweden and have trained more than 1400 Fellows who now work in more than 115 countries. Many serve as leaders in governments, NGOs, the military, education, law enforcement, and international organisations like the United Nations and the World Bank.
  • Hundreds of thousands of people now enjoy access to clean water, health care and education, thanks to the Foundation’s humanitarian projects.
  • Jodie also promoted the Australian Fellowship of Golfing Rotarians golf tournament which is being run by her Rotary Satellite Club of Ascot which is coming up from 14 to 19 April 2024 and being held in Busselton. Details are in the District newsletter each week. For more information, please go to agfr.org
