President Jill Elias opened the meeting at 6.30 pm on 17 July 2023.

Welcome to our guests, Bob Hunter, Marion Cahif, and Michael Elias.

John Thornton led the meeting in singing the National Anthem, who commented ‘Jolly Good’. High praise, indeed.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

When was Bold Park officially established and after whom was it named?

Answer: In 1936, Bold Park was established as a place '...for the people of Perth' (Perth City Council, 1936). It was named after William E. Bold, the Town Clerk of the City of Perth from 1900 to 1944 (the longest serving Town Clerk for the City of Perth).

Answered correctly by Hugh Stowell who showed he knows his history thoroughly.

Other Announcements Anita Bourke asked for one more volunteer this Wednesday to pack PPE at SCGH, it should take about an hour.

ROTARY MOMENT: (Jill Elias)

A Paul Harris Fellow Award was presented to Kevin Jackson. Craig James read out the citation.

Kevin joined the Rotary Club of Dalkeith on 23 April 2017. For his first two Rotary Years Kevin served on the Vocational Services committee as a member before moving to the Public Image committee as Chair and Board Member in the 2018/2019 Rotary Year, roles he also held in the 2019 and 2020 Rotary Years.

Kevin used his contacts at Capital Radio and the Post Newspaper to enhance the public profile of our Club in a manner not so consistently achieved before. Kevin continued his membership of the Public Image Committee following the end of his term on 30 June 2020.

Kevin showed an interest and real commitment to learning about Rotary by attending leadership courses and conferences and maintained close contact with other Rotary Clubs to keep abreast of their activities, always looking for opportunities to share or support.

Kevin generously used his connections in the WA Arts Community to enable RCD Members to enjoy unique cultural experiences exposing Members through private viewings to the Karalee Collection at Curtin University, the Holmes a ‘Court Exhibition, and the Kerry Stokes Collection amongst others. Through his connection with the WA Ballet Company members were able to view the company rehearse Dracula the Ballet and to view performances of Alice in Wonderland and Dracula the Ballet.

Kevin has been a good-natured contributor to fines imposed by successive Sergeants at Arms, a strong supporter of RCD’s activities and fund raising, generous with his time and knowledge to the betterment of the Club and Rotary, and richly deserves this recognition.

Thanks to Anita Bourke for organising the packing and collection of 104 boxes of PPE and delivery to CTEC at UWA on Wednesday 19 July. A quick and seamless operation.

SERGEANT SESSION: (Bob Davis):

Fines were dispensed for the following:

Jonas Edner for not being at his café, Moose, when Pek, Lindsay, and Michael ‘Dennis’ Elias were enjoying coffee there.
Kevin Jackson for his Paul Harris Fellow Award.
Ann Bray and Win Jones for departure tax.
Kent Warburton, Bruce Fiegert, and Geoff Cahif for being named as successful bowlers in the newspaper.
The Sergeant self-fined for his letter published in the paper.
Peter Panek for having his photo in the paper.
Jason van Straalen for having a new vehicle.
The tree planters for not raising $2.5 million in time for the Canning River plantings.

The Sergeant will donate $15 to fines if someone can take Ada.

GUEST SPEAKER: Bob Hunter – introduced by Jason van Straalen

Bob served 16 years in the military, primarily in the SAS, but also in the Parachute Battalion and as a United Nations military observer in the Middle East. Bob was the Squadron Commander of the SAS unit involved in the tragic Black Hawk accident in Townsville in 1996 which killed 18 men.
After his service, Bob co-founded Osprey International, a specialist risk advisory firm.
Bob recently finished a five year stint at Rugby WA as its CEO.
Bob spoke of the devastation and the reconstruction of the team after the Black Hawk incident of the SAS squadron.
In 2004, Iraq was to hold its first elections in thirty years. Bob and his partners put in a bid to the UN to run the elections. Even though they were a small firm in comparison to the multinationals who were competing against them, the smaller group had the advantage as they could build teams together with the locals, who were critical to the success of the elections through integration.
The reason why Bob’s group was so successful was the alignment of purpose. They were presented with the opportunity to conduct the massive operation and they used innovative methods but with a clear purpose.
In all walks of life, alignment of purpose will overcome any issues and ensure success.
