Sophie Harrington and Robyn Smith - Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Australia
Sophie Harrington explained that she was the CEO of program development and implementation for FASD throughout Australia.
Robyn explained that her responsibility was for “helplines” and that she had been a helpline officer for the last six years. The helpline effectively offered a triage service to the public.
FASD was founded 22 years ago by Sue Myers who fostered a child after raising her own family. The foster child was later diagnosed with foetal alcohol disorders. The causes are the effects of alcohol on the unborn child in the early stages of pregnancy, often before the mother realised that she was pregnant as the baby is subject to developmental issues up to 8 weeks of pregnancy.
The problem is evident in all spectrums of society.
The key is for early diagnosis of the problem
FASD has well qualified and experienced Board but is operating on a shoestring. It is very grateful for the support given by our Rotary Club.
Sophie presented the Club with a certificate of appreciation for our contribution.
President-Elect John thanked Sophie and Robin for their interesting talk and presented them with a beautiful Rotary Fruit Cake.
