President’s Report
The board has been working hard this week to position the club for success during the suspension of meetings due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Two primary initiatives have been started this week.
- Weekly Club Bulletin which you are now reading.
- A member support initiative to ensure that our members are well supported during these difficult times. To this end we have set up two teams to deliver this support as follows:
- Member Communication Team – this team will be responsible for making regular contact with all our members to ensure they are in good health, good spirits and to check if they need any assistance in their daily lives, be it a meal, a supermarket run, a lawn mowed or assistance with transport to an appointment. The members of this team are:
- Trevor Gorey
- Graeme Sansom
- John MacKinnon
- John Lindquist, and
- Russell Hawkins
Expect a call from one of these team members in the near future. They are here to help you, please use their services to ensure your isolation is more bearable.
- Members Support Team – this team delivers the assistance that the members have requested via the Member Communication Team. We are recruiting 6 to 8 members to deliver these services, if you feel comfortable being out and about then please reach out to myself or Anthony to volunteer. Those who have already agreed to assist are:
- Anita Bourke
- John Murdoch
- Lastly, David Ellis has put his hand up to coordinate these two teams and ensure we deliver a quality outcome for our members. If you have a problem and your Communication Team member is not available then please reach out to David as needed.

Peter is organising the induction of Jason van Straalen in the coming week. We will induct Jason in a small gathering which will be recorded and made available for members to access and view.

Youth:
Committee will keep running using virtual meetings.
This week we have an update from Kim Smith on the recent activities of the Youth Committee.
- Rotary Youth Exchange Outbound. We received the following update on 17th March from our RYE student, Daniel Laurance, who is in Norway.
“Hey, Kim,
Doing well, despite the compulsory home quarantine for three weeks which began last week, I have had an excellent time so far.
I had the thought that the report which I sent to rotary would get through to you but I’m guessing it didn't go through.
Schools have been very exciting with a welcoming, productive and chilled environment. Snow has been coming off and on for some great powder snowing a few weekends in a row as well as some attempted snowboarding and thorough cross-country skiing adventures. I’m babysitting a nine-year-old kid named Ole Kristian every week or so which has been challenging because of his English skills but also a great way to learn Norwegian and also teach some English. I've cooked some Australian meals for my family which are an amazing group of people with many connections allowing me to have something to do every minute of every day, things such as; target shooting, hunting, ice skating, skiing trips, voluntary help, CrossFit sessions, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and more which I can’t seem to recount at the moment. All-round it’s been a great experience far. I'll create a file with a bunch of photos to browse through.
- Rotary Youth Exchange Inbound. While we expected to receive an inbound student in June this is now on hold until there is a clearance to receive student applications by the Minister for Education.
- RYPEN. Unfortunately, a decision has been made to postpone the RYPEN 2020 Camp due to be held in May this year. At this stage, it's being moved to 19 - 21 March 2021. We had been in discussion with Quinn’s Baptist College to sponsor 6 of their students. They have expressed interest in the program in 2021.
- Earlyact at Dalkeith Primary School. After one year of operation, Early Act will be discontinued at Dalkeith Primary. The initial motivation for launching Early Act at Dalkeith was to aid, promote and support the leadership program of the Year 6 students at Dalkeith Primary. After discussion with Ms Lisa Ianello, the Year 6 Teacher, we have agreed that it is not feasible to continue to engage the Year 6 students in the Early Act program as the School has multiple lunchtime groups and committees engaged in a wide variety of activities making it difficult to meet on a regular basis. Many thanks to Peter Smith for his work over the last year with Earlyact.
- School link with Shenton College. On a more positive note, a meeting was held on 6th March between DRC, Nedlands RC, the Shenton College Principal, Mike Morgan, and each of the year teacher co-ordinator. This was a very constructive meeting with Shenton now keen to work with Rotary. They wish to embrace the suite of Rotary programs ( RYE, RYPEN, RYLA etc) and have some of their own programs they would like us to consider supporting. They were particularly keen to help us find host parents for the RYE program within their school community. This is very welcome as it will relieve a lot of pressure on our club to find host parents within our membership.

In future bulletins, there will guest speakers or lead articles. Next week we plan to have an interview with the Warden of St Georges College, Ian Hardy.

Today the Nedlands Golf Club had to close all its bar and catering facilities.
We understand that the chef is going to prepare a takeaway menu that will be available to members and the wider community in the near future.
As soon as it is available we will distribute it to you all.
In these difficult times for our local community please do your best to buy local to ensure we have a community after the virus burns itself out.
