Guest Speaker:  Alice Mabin

Craig James introduced Alice.  She describes herself as an agribusiness speaker and author.  She is from Linthorpe, Queensland.  In 2015  she won the BEFA  Asia Pacific Female Entrepreneur of the Year and is recognised as Australia’s  #1 Rural Lifestyle Photographer.   Alice has self-published two books,  “the Drover”  and “The Driver”.  She has visited over 500 farms around Australia.  Soon to be released a third book “ The Winding Road”.

Alice said she has been lucky in life.  She grew up in NZ  and now lives on a large property in Queensland.  She has always made her own decisions.   In one year she visited 365 farms -  one a day!  Rotary has been a great support to her over the years and she has been a guest speaker many times around Australia.
Her first book, “The Drover”  is now in Schools and has been very popular.  A publisher could not be found with any interest so she self-published.  Initially tried cold-calling (including Twiggy Forrest)   but didn’t work very well.  Bookshops wouldn’t sell her book until she dropped them off at no charge.  After this orders soon flooded in.  However, initially, she sold her car to fund the sale of the books.  To date, she has sold over 60,000 copies.
One of her most memorable photos was an aerial shot of a large number of harvesters working together.  The farmer just happened to have a helicopter in his shed which she used for the aerial shot!
Books were available for sale after the meeting with part monies going to the Men’s Shed.

Pres John Bolto thanked Alice  for her interesting talk and her advocacy of  agribusiness which is vital but probably misunderstood.
