GUEST SPEAKER: PAUL PARIZEL – introduced by Mark Khangure:
Appointed in 2019, Professor Paul Parizel holds the inaugural David Hartley Chair of Radiology with an academic appointment as Full Professor at The University of Western Australia Medical School and a clinical appointment at Royal Perth Hospital. Since 2020, he has served as the Director of the Western Australia National Imaging Facility (NIF) Node, hosted by UWA.
Paul is a former President and Chair of the Board of Directors of the European Society of Radiology, as well as a former President of the European Society of Neuroradiology. A neuroradiologist by training, his main scientific interests include imaging of the brain and spine, as well as quantitative imaging techniques. Paul has authored or co-authored over 600 peer-reviewed papers. His work has been cited more than 26,000 times to date.
Paul’s international career started when he received an International Scholarship Award from the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International in Evanston, Illinois, U.S.A. This allowed him to do a Fellowship in Neuroradiology in Boston, with a dual appointment as “Clinical Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital” and “Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School”. He remembers having to learn the 4-way Rotary test (in French, since that was the language of the club that sponsored him) and learned about Paul Harris.
Paul talked about the history of radiology which started with Wilhelm Röntgen and outlined some of the radiological milestones. It is interesting to note that in the years since Paul started his medical career that the methods he used first for reading radiological records are now largely obsolete, with the invention of the CT and PET scans and MRI.
The invention of CT and PET scans and MRIs, the work of a radiologist is now more pressured as volume of work can be valued by managers more above quality. Sometimes quiet and thoughtful reflection of medical reports is needed but radiology is seen as merely a business by some.
The NIF is located at the QEII centre and is the only node in Western Australia. There are thirteen other sites in Australia. NIF houses powerful, state-of-the-art equipment (digital PET-CT and 3T MRI) in a research-dedicated environment. These instruments provide a unique capacity for standardised, reproducible and quantifiable imaging to support biomedical research and imaging for clinical trials.
Western Australia is very lucky to have Paul as a NIF Node Director with his world-class calibre background, well done to Mark Khangure for luring him to Perth. Thanks to Paul for his illuminating talk to the Club.
