President Craig asked members and guests to sing the anthem tunefully in the absence of John Thornton’s tutelage, The members were encouraged to begin learning the second verse of the national anthem.

President Craig announced that tonight the Club will induct new member Paul Napper and announce the Pride of Workmanship awards.

Question of the Week:
The question for this week was read by President Craig:
"Advance Australia Fair" was composed in the late 19th century by Peter Dodds McCormick under the pen-name "Amicus" (which means "friend" in Latin). It was first performed by Andrew Fairfax at a Highland Society function in Sydney on 30 November 1878. The song quickly gained popularity and an amended version was sung by a choir of around 10,000 at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901. In 1907 the Australian Government awarded McCormick £100 for his composition.
Since the original lyrics were written in 1879, there have been several changes, in some cases with the intent of increasing the anthem's inclusiveness and gender neutrality. Some of these were minor while others have significantly changed the song. The original song was four verses long. For its adoption as the national anthem, the song was cut from four verses to two – the original first verse and a variation of the original third verse.

Induction:
Paul Napper was brought forward and introduced to the members by David Ellis.
PP John Lindquist read the membership induction and advised Paul he would enjoy the vocational classification of Real Estate. He then invited President Craig to come forward and present Paul with his membership badge, documentation and dinner plate. President Craig congratulated Paul on being the world’s newest Rotarian and advised him he would be a member of the Youth Committee, asking Youth Director Kim Smith to come forward and meet his new member and accompany him back to his seat.
David Ellis presented Paul with his Rotary Tee shirt.
Club Announcements:
PP Peter Panek gave members an update on the trip to Bali.
PP Peter thanked the 32 members who participated in the Bicycle count and said that providing all members submit their paper-war the club will receive $1,600.
PP Bob Davis updated members on the Dalkeith Nedlands Probus Club which Rotary Club of Dalkeith helped found many years ago and which he attended recently. The club has a cap limit of 80 members and is “full”. The Dalkeith Rotary Club is listed as the parent club.
Bob also reported that George Melville was present and he passed on the best wishes of members to him.
John Murdoch commended the Rotary Learning Institute to members and said four Dalkeith Rotarians have now completed all three days of the course and have a certificate to confirm that.

21 Members have registered to attend the Conference, in addition, those members will mostly be accompanied by Partners. RCD by far the largest participating Club.

Vocational Service: (Peter Marfleet/Kevin Jackson): Chris Cole reminded members attending the Corsini exhibition to be early.
There are still opportunities for the Carrolup Collection.
Sunday 15th April 2 pm … John Curtin Art Gallery A guided viewing of the Carrolup Collection and a sumptuous afternoon tea (complimentary) with Curator Chris Malcolm. There will also be a visit to the Aboriginal Studies building to look at the spectacular mosaic floor.
Foundation and International Service: (Ken Ilett/Gary Dienhoff): President Craig congratulated Pek and his fellow organisers for another highly successful and very enjoyable International dinner on 26th Feb. Gary Dienhoff announced a meeting straight after the club meeting to discuss funds required for the JFF Grant application.

Youth: (Kim Smith/Leon Lorenzen): Kim announced there would be a committee meeting tonight.
Richard Gorham made an announcement about the Science and Engineering Challenge (The Challenge). It is an outreach program aimed at changing students’ perceptions of science and engineering. Through the Challenge, students experience aspects of these disciplines which they would not usually see in their local school environment. The Challenge aims to inspire students in Year 10 (and below) to consider a future career in science and engineering by choosing to study subjects such as maths, physics and chemistry (the enabling sciences) in years 11 and 12.
The lead role involves having the event logistically organised so that University of Newcastle can arrive in Perth with its bus and the Event Content and handed the venue ready for use, volunteers in place and funding secured. Arrangements for the Venue at the Show Grounds have been secured for the next 3 years at least.
The 2018 involvement for RDC is to find a small funding shortfall (<$10,000) from sponsors (universities, mining companies, engineering firms, chemical businesses), follow up the 30 schools which are attending to pay their $400 capitation and to arrange the furniture needed for the Event. The nature and reputation of the Event is surely likely to attract corporate sponsorship.
Midland has secured an annual funder (Defence Force Services for $14,000) and will look after recruiting and feeding the volunteers. Richard has made it clear that if RCD does accept the request, it will not want to be responsible for any financial shortfall in 2018 – that will stay will Midland or District.
This project “ticks a lot of Boxes” for RCD. It also affords the Club another opportunity to involve other Western Suburb Rotary Clubs in another project lead by RCD that may assist those Clubs with recruiting and retaining members.
Richard Gorham has looked into the opportunity to support Rotary Club of Midland in the conduct of the 2018 Event on 9-13 April also with the view to “learning the ropes” before taking on the lead role of Regional Organising Committee in 2019 and beyond.
Richard has agreed to be the lead person for the 2018 Event and to be involved in the longer term. The following YouTube video is instructive.

President's Report:
Rotary Learning Institute.
John Murdoch, David Ellis and Craig James completed the 3-day course yesterday and received their Recognition of Successful Completion Certificates.
That brings to 4 the number of RCD members to have been recognised in this Rotary Year. Other RCD members who have partially completed the Couse are Nigel Johnson, Kim Smith, Kevin Jackson and John McKinnon.
International Dinner thanks to Pek and the International Committee for arranging.
The Rotary Club of Matilda Bay invites Rotarians to join it for the Rotary Celebration Breakfast @ Yagan Square on Wednesday 28th March at 7 am.
The breakfast will be an opportunity for people to learn more about:
Yagan Square with its strong Aboriginal narrative incorporating stories from the Wadjuk people and the natural landscapes of WA, and
the work of Rotary in developing partnerships with Aboriginal communities.
The key speaker is Dr Richard Walley OAM.
At 8.30 am there will be short tours of Yagan Square.

Pride of Workmanship Award:
Chris Cole came to the front to announce the Pride of Workmanship Award which the Club had great pleasure in awarding Amanda Lummis from Cupid Catering.
The Rotary Club of Dalkeith Pride in Workmanship Award is made to local businesses and individuals, irrespective of age or vocation, who in the eyes of their clients and employers show a distinct quality in their approach, attitude and dedication to their job.
Amanda Lummis and Cupid Catering provide “heavenly food at down to earth prices” and club members are very grateful to be recipients of Amanda’s great food.
