John Thornton used his thingamajig to lead the meeting in singing the National Anthem and the performance was proclaimed as “Jolly good” (a PB for us).

Charitable Trust (Russell Hawkins) It is nearly that time of the year for charitable collection for the Trust. The portfolio is performing well. Also, Russell will be collecting shortly from Margaret River cases of red wine and chardonnay if anyone is interested in buying either or both.

 

Secretary (Craig James) Craig is collecting for the Red Shield Appeal for the Salvation Army. If anyone would like to contribute cash at the meetings, please bring along some money to any meeting from now until 29 May.

 

Club Service (Jill Elias) The dinner meeting on Monday 12 June will be held at the Hollywood Subiaco Bowls Club to accommodate the speaker who is wheelchair bound. $40 a head for a buffet, buying our own drinks as usual. Parking off Verdun Street, Nedlands.

 

Youth Service (Kim Smith) The weeklong Science and Engineering Challenge started at the Showgrounds today. Forty schools will participate over the week, involving almost 1,300 students. Many thanks to the volunteers from the Rotary Club of Dalkeith, without them the event would not proceed.

 

 

 

Recently one of our members was subjected to an online/phone scam and potential identity theft. Luckily there appears to be no monetary loss, however, there is considerable inconvenience and some stress in changing personal documents, passwords, etc. Next Monday 15 May, Nick Shmakov from Res-Q IT Computer Services in Claremont will come along to discuss cyber security. All members and their partners are encouraged to attend. Please register guests on ClubRunner by Friday for catering numbers. Nick will take questions and if any member has a specific issue to raise, please email him at the address below and he will endeavour to answer it at the meeting on Monday.

 

 

Diane is the founder of The Magic Coat Foundation. Diane has a Bachelor of Social Science in Women and Children Studies and a Diploma of Education. She was a primary school teacher and increasingly she heard from many 8 and 9 year olds how unhappy they were, because their parents were fighting, they were bullied, they had no food to eat, and many and varied reasons which impacted their childhoods. Diane wrote lessons for her class children to help them manage their worries and build resilience. Diane left teaching to focus solely on developing a programme that could provide a common language for adults and children to share that would help children to build confidence and resilience, manage their emotions and encourage empathy for others. This developed into the Magic Coat Program. Diane presents at prisons, women’s refuges, Ronald McDonald House and schools. In 2016, Justin Langer and his father, Colin, asked Diane to help with their Make-A-Difference WA Foundation and in 2022 their foundation merged with Diane’s and changed its name to The Magic Coat Foundation. Diane has written a book called The Magic Coat which focuses on characters with whom children can relate, such as the Magic Coat itself, which is invisible except to the children themselves and which protects them, Meshell, Omelia and Pandora, Pop the Cork, Sebastian the Seahorse and Solomon the Surfboard. The book has been adapted and sent to Poland to be given to Ukrainian refugee children. The printing is done in Poland at the cost of $1.10 per book and 20,000 books have been distributed. Diane has also developed packs for Perth Children’s Hospital patients to ease their homesickness and distress when admitted for treatment and operations. The pack contains the book and a pillowcase with the book characters. Due to its immense popularity, the hospital has asked for another 18,000 hospital packs!
