Meeting Notes  8th September 2025

Guest Speaker Stephen Satchell

Past President Jill Elias opened the meeting at 6.30 pm.

Welcome to our guest speaker, Stephen Satchell.

The meeting was opened by singing the National Anthem, led by Leon.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

What is the Second Law of Thermodynamics?

Answer: The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the state of entropy of the entire universe, as an isolated system, will always increase over time.

Correctly answered by Russell Hawkins

FAMILY AND FRIENDS:

  •     Valdarno’s – Unfortunately, Valdarno’s will be closing on Friday, 24 October 2025, due to new buildings being erected on the site. It is looking for an alternative venue from which to operate. Our Club awarded Valdarno’s an Excellence in Workmanship trophy and it has been a well patronised restaurant by our Members.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:

  • Books for Buk bilong Pikinini – Michael Bisset reported to the meeting that 63 boxes of books collected from Perth primary schools and weighing 650kgs were shipped off to Queensland courtesy of Sadleirs towards the final destination of Papua New Guinea. Seven boxes of books were also donated to Grandcarers WA. Thanks to Michael and David Miller for collecting the books from the schools and arranging the transportation. Also, thanks to Kevin Jackson for the original contact at Sadleirs and to Lindsay Dry for the Grandcarers WA suggestion.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES: The following birthday was announced by Susan Watson:

  •      Leon Lorenzen for suggesting all Dockers supporters be fined;

  •      All Dockers supporters (of which there were remarkably few);

  •      Lindsay Dry for breaking the EFTPOS machine tonight;

  •      Paul Kestell for being associated with our guest speaker but refusing to disclose how he knows him;

  •      Russell Hawkins for being in sunny Hawai’i when it has been cold here;

  •      Michael Bisset for representing us in an athletics competition in Japan soon.

GUEST SPEAKER: Stephen Satchell – introduced by Paul Kestell.

           Stephen Satchell

 Stephen Satchell as he is usually seen.

Stephen has been driving taxis, limousines and coaches for nearly five decades. 85% of his work has been at night, and 75% has been in Northbridge. His theme was "What would I know?"

Stephen has had many colourful characters in his cars, well-known celebrities, politicians, ambassadors, rock stars and seen them in all sorts of conditions. Due to libel laws, it is probably best not to recall some of those stories in print!

Stephen is the Gabby Cabby on 6PR and also the Phantom Foody.

There are currently 3,000 taxis in Perth and 13,000 others, such as Uber and limousines. It costs $325,000 to purchase taxi plates in Perth and $400 to obtain a taxi licence.

Stephen has seen many highs and lows in the taxi industry and has been chairman of many groups to protect taxi drivers. In answer to his theme question, he knows EVERYTHING!

      Many thanks to Stephen for his amusing and illuminating stories.
