• Ronald McDonald House—David Miller informed the meeting of another volunteering opportunity to cook dinner at Ronald McDonald House on Wednesday, 30 October. Further details will follow.

- Post article—Well done to Jason van Straalen for getting another article published in the Post this past week. The article was about the daffodils sold by Dalkeith members and their families and friends on behalf of the Cancer Council WA, an opportunity created by David Miller.

- John Thornton – Bob Davis received an email ostensibly from John Thornton during the week, as did a number of other members. One person replied to the original email and was asked to buy an Apple gift card for John’s niece’s birthday as “I am away” at the moment. Contact was made with John’s family and John Junior asked that this scam email issue be raised at the Club meeting. John Junior was really appreciative that this was brought to the family’s attention, thanks to John Bolto for the suggestion. He was going in to see his father that afternoon to change passwords and the like. John Junior reported that his father is in good health at the moment bar some laryngitis and John Senior had beaten John Junior at backgammon this week and was feeling quite happy with himself.
- MetSO – We have received a lovely email of thanks from a MetSO young artist, Chern Yue.
Dear Rotary Club of Dalkeith,
Thank you so much for supporting the MetSO Young Artists of 2023 with the MetSO Gift Fund! Performing with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra was one of the highlights of 2023 for me and a core memory that will not be forgotten. It was one of the events that I most anticipated throughout the year -- and it wasn't just because I was lucky enough to be granted the opportunity to perform, but also because I loved the encouraging and supportive atmosphere created by the orchestra, conductor, Elise Chong and Ann herself!
I recently moved to Melbourne this year, partially because of the different musical opportunities provided here. The gift fund will be a tremendous help in supporting competition and festival costs and music extracurricular that I would love to partake in. I'm positive that it will contribute to furthering my musical journey.
Thank you so much once again! And I hope to attend a MetSO concert once I'm back in Perth again!

- Bicycles for Humanity (WA) – You may recall David Tucker spoke here a couple of weeks ago. He has emailed to say that the container full of 450 bicycles which was funded with $5,000 from the Charitable Trust has arrived in Howick in South Africa. As a fundraising event for Bicycles for Humanity (WA), David and our own Richard Gorham are riding from Perth to Esperance in October and you can sponsor them here https://www.givenow.com.au/cr/esperanceeventure

- Claremont Showgrounds Men’s Shed – John Bolto announced that over 25,500 people had been through the Men’s Shed during the Royal Show, with 4,700 being the largest number of people through on one day. The Men’s Shed made $38,500 revenue.

The following members were fined:
- Kevin Jackson because it is what Sergeant Jason would do, to fine Kevin first, for being on Capital Radio and for an arrival tax, any excuse really;
- John Lindquist was fined $1 for each year of his life;
- Jonas Edner for a rave review of Moose in the Sunday Times and for the Sergeant’s daughter’s positive review that she posted to her Instagram account;
- Richard Ranshaw for agreeing with a little too much alacrity to be the flower giver tonight;
- Bob Davis for sending his wife and daughter to help volunteer at the Cancer Council Daffodil Day and for them getting their photo published in the Post;
- John Bolto for spending his time at the Show when not in the Men’s Shed on the roller coaster.

- Australian Wildlife Conservancy started in 1991 when Martin Copley purchased Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary in the Perth Hills. It has since grown to become the largest private owner and manager of conservation land in Australia, delivering and influencing effective conservation across sanctuaries and partnership sites in iconic regions of Australia. AWC started with 268 hectares at Karakamia and now has over 12.9 million hectares across Australia.
- AWC envisions a world where Australia’s biodiversity is valued and effectively conserved by an engaged community. Its mission is the effective conservation of all Australian animal species and their habitats.
- AWC leads the charge in the push against feral cats and foxes. It uses 1080 poison and gel bullets, the poison does not affect native animals. In the long term, AWC is looking to genetic solutions through the CSIRO.
- AWC conducts a rewilding programme to translocate endangered animals. At Mt Gibson, there is a feral predator-free haven where ten species have been reintroduced.
- 95% of the money for AWC comes from private funding, and only 5% comes from governments.
