  • MetSO concert—The annual MetSO concert with the Echoes of Ukraine choir will be held at Government House on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 3 p.m. Ann Bray would like some volunteers to help at the concert. Please email her at acbray45@icloud.com if you can assist. Members are also encouraged to attend the concert in any event; there is no need to volunteer.
  • Rotary Shirt Day - Sunday, February 23, 2025, is also Wear Your Rotary Shirt Day. Why not wear your Rotary shirt to the concert? Please note that Rotary shirts will be ordered shortly for new members of the Club.
  • Bicycle Count - Peter Panek advised that he has 23 of the 26 spots filled for the national bike count to be held from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4. Most of the spots are located in Cottesloe and the Cambridge surrounds. An email with details was sent to all members. Please email Peter at ppanek@merit-group.com.au if you are able to assist in filling the last three spots. The Club makes $70 per site. Thanks to Peter for organising this opportunity.

ROTARY MOMENTS:
 •         Charitable Trust – Last week, the Board of the Charitable Trust held its first meeting for the year. At the meeting, it was decided that $10,000 would be donated to the John Fawcett Foundation, $5,000 to the Melanoma Research Foundation and $10,000 to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.

•          Rotary Exchange Student Mathilda Hontoir - We received a postcard from Mathilda Hontoir, our Belgian Rotary Exchange student. She is enjoying her university life and remembers fondly her stay in Australia.

•          Assisi Centre in Uganda – Through the hard work of Michael Bisset, a collaboration between the Club and the Trust was set up, and with funds from a District Grant, a new kitchen was installed at Senya Primary School in Uganda. Emily from the school writes:

Dear Michael,

It is impossible to tell it all. The gratitude, the joy, the pride and happiness that comes with this unique accomplishment and memorable experience! It is impossible to describe it all. But here we are. Dancing away, drumming, singing and celebrating a wonderful journey and achievement!

Once again, we thank you, the District, Rotary Club of Dalkeith and the Charitable Trust, for making 2025 a year of hope for the children and the teachers at Senya Primary School.

The Project was to build a school kitchen and water storage for the school community to enable nutritious meals to be provided in a hygienic environment and to enable the cooks to work safely compared to the previous smoky wooden lean-to.

Emily

ACTING SERGEANT SESSION: The following members were fined by the Acting Sergeant:
  • Richard Ranshaw for making Sean cry at the golf club barbecue last week and for harassing joggers at College Park;
  • Susie Rich, Paul Kestell and Ross Mackellar just because they can be fined now;
  • Pek Goh for marrying on Valentine’s Day so he did not have to have two celebrations;
  • Nigel, Bob, Lindsay, Russell, Peter Panek, Craig, David Ellis, John Martin, John Lindquist, John Bolto, John Murdoch, Ant, Win, Hugh and Jonas for being a Past President, present President or future President of the Club.

GUEST SPEAKER: Ken Mullin – introduced by Richard Gorham

  • In the 2021 census, 9,729 people in Western Australia were classed as homeless. Of these, 21% were under 18 years old.
  • Currently, 98% of rentals in Western Australia are not affordable for a single person on a minimum wage.
  • In Victoria, a programme called Kids Under Cover was started to provide accommodation for 18 to 22 year olds who are transitioning out of foster care or institutional care once they become adults. Over 600 tiny homes have been set up in backyards in Victoria under the programme, helping 940 young adults.
  • Ken and Rotary Clubs in Western Australia try to emulate the Victorian project. The State Government has stated that a granny flat in a backyard does not require building permission from a council as long as it is within the council requirements, such as distance from fences and the like.
  • Rotary will own the units. Each unit costs $110,000 to fabricate and install. The young adult is charged rent. At present, there are two homes in Western Australia. Ken and others in charge of the Tiny Homes project here are fundraising to obtain more tiny homes.
  • Thanks to Ken for visiting our Club and discussing the Tiny Homes project.
