Any Rotarian who has news they would like to share regarding Family or Friends?
- Anita shared that her husband John has recently had aortic aneurism repair surgery. He is recovering well. Anita reminds us that it is a simple ultrasound inspection that can see if there is any problem. People over 50 years old should have a scan at some time. They have recently celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary and it seemed like a good idea for Anita to retire from full-time work.
- John Bolto mentioned that at Brian English’s funeral the church was completely full. We think this showed the esteem that Brian was held.

Jason mentioned that Jon Steward will be Sergeant until the end of the year.

GUEST SPEAKER : (Dr Katrina Stratton MLA Nedlands )

Pres Jason invited David Ellis to introduce Dr Katrina Stratton MLA who will speak about Local Issues from the Local Member. David noted that Katrina went to school in Nedlands, Shenton College and did a Degree, Hons and PhD at UWA in Social Work. Welcome to Katrina.
Katrina’s story was given in three parts.

- The Campaign
- 4 months in Office & Nedlands
Katrina is a Social Worker and has worked in hospitals and other community health care facilities. Eventually, she worked at Wanslea which cares for children during respite for parent/grandparents. It was started during WII when the Mother was basically a single parent. It gave well-needed respite. Florence Hummerston created it by recognising a community need. Unfortunately, the need still exists today because Grandparents are looking after children because the parents cannot give good care ( drugs, DV etc). Hence the need for respite and assistance.

They did a data project to see how Grandparents were fairing. On every metric they were worse off - poverty, health etc etc. However, they reported great joy in raising healthy, happy & safe kids. The children were also better off in all metrics compared with foster children. Labor endorsed looking after Grandparent carers better as part of their platform.
The Campaign: Started in Lockdown! It was a short sharp 5-week campaign. Everybody took Nedlands for granted. Katrina has lived in Nedlands for 40 of her 48 years. Her manager and she looked at the Census Data and got to work. A lot of people are motivated to move to the area to enable sending their Kids to Shenton College or Bob Hawke College. Also, 30% of the electorate are > 65 years old.
Antony Green called the seat for Labor on the night of the election but later withdraw his comment. It took a week for the seat to be officially called for Labor.
The Office is in the same place on Hampden Road. She is used to the work as her community work is similar to electoral work - solving people’s problems & issues.
Parliament is a different beast. Many protocols and procedures. A fast learning curve. From a Nedlands point-of-view, the main issues are protecting the environment, anti-logging old growth, anti-development / pro-development and aging-in-place.
President Jason thanked Katrina for an interesting and informative talk. A beautiful Rotary fruit cake was given as a token of our appreciation.
