Guest Speakers:    Anna Sudlow (Chair) & Carol Shannon (CEO) Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation
Anna was introduced by Graeme Sansom
The Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation has trained over 40,000 people since 1986.
Anna spoke on the challenges, progress & opportunities.
The foundation obviously needs to have financial sustainability.  Their revenue stream meets their operational expenses but not their likely capital and maintenance costs as the ship ages. This may also mean the full replacement cost of a new ship sometime in the future.    Also new and changed regulations add more compliance costs.
Funding is being met by doing the following;
  • Some from the State Govt
  • Links with the education curriculum
  • Increasing corporate engagement
  • Greater product diversification
  • Build geographic diversity
  • Sell as a ‘low tech’ youth capability!
Opportunities;
  • Funding specific equipment
  • Youth sponsorship
  • Donations
  • Voyage sponsorship with different groups
Carol then spoke on the Ship, Benefits and funding structure.
She started on the Ship 30 years ago and is now their CEO.  It was a very ambitious project by Dr Mal Hay and Rory Argyle.  Launched in 1986 as STS Leeuwin II.    In 33 years, they have trained 40,000 youth.  A sail training voyage lasts 5 -7 days and its aim is to build teamwork and resilience.
The Leeuwin is a steel-hulled 3 masted Barquintine   810m2 sail, 55m long and 9.1 m beam.  It accommodates 55 pax.  5 crew 10 Volunteers and 40 trainees.  It changes lives and builds resilience so that they make better decisions in life.
Two key challenges;
  • Going to the top of the mast
  • Seasickness which is part of the journey
In 2020 they need to install a new marine geographic information system.  This will cost around $100k.
The cost to each youth or their sponsors is $2,350 per person.   They all have amazing outcomes with the youth that sail with her.

Act Pres Craig thanked Carol & Anna.  It was very interesting to hear all about it.  It is of great benefit to the Youth of WA.
