Meeting Notes

 21st November 2022

Guest Speaker
Neil Wilkie
President John Murdoch opened the meeting at 6.30 pm on 21 November 2022.

John Thornton is present so can he please lead us in singing Advance Australia Fair.

WELCOME to our Guests:
Greg Thurston, June Wilkie, Julia Edwards, and Robyn Chien.
Joshua Morley, a former RYLA participant, gave an inspirational outline of the benefits of RYLA. He agreed it can be life-changing and it was so for him. Joshua’s achievements to date confirm the value of this programme.
 Joshua Morley
Greg Thurston
Greg Thurston thanked the DRC for its commitment to the Rotary Foundation, particularly the Polio Plus project. After going ten months without a case, the past 18 months saw immunization stopped due to Covid, so outbreaks have increased and are of concern in a variety of countries this wouldn’t be expected, such as the UK, USA, and Israel. Africa is also experiencing an increase.
A new campaign for 2026 is planned.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Q:  In the 1830’s Reveley’s watermill and mill-‐stream occupied a site on St George’s Terrace.
What is presently situated on that allotment?
A: The Perth Technical School and part of the Old Boys School, now The National Trust.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
Any Rotarians with news they would like to share regarding Family or Friends?
I didn’t add Nigel’s news of the previous week. Nigel’s twin sons turned 50 and celebrated in style with their father and sister.

Stuart Brash is presently in SJOG Hospital and can take visitors.

Lizzi of Lizzi Bees father passed away after a lengthy illness. Peter Barnes was a former Rotarian, so Lizzi Bees supports the DRC.

Long-serving Golf Club employee Denise Meadmore had her last night this week and is retiring. As this was a bit of a surprise and we could not thank her properly, Denise is attending as our guest next week, so we can properly thank her. Anita has kindly offered to buy her a suitable gift, and members will be asked to contribute $5. Denise has been at the NGC for some 26 years, so her support and patience to members deserves recognition

ROTARY MOMENT: (John Murdoch)
The Rotary Foundation is raising funds on Giving Tuesday, 29 November. This Global Day of Generosity is an opportunity for all Rotary members to make a big impact with a gift of any size to our Annual Fund-SHARE. Last year, we raised more than ever before — over US$1 million! We’re asking you to help us surpass that this year so that we can do better together.

The Foundation will again recognize the top three clubs in fundraising, donor participation, and online giving. Just make sure that the gifts are made on 29 November.

Thank you for your leadership and support. We know that with your help, Giving Tuesday will be a bigger success than ever.

Presentation by Greg Thurston.

SERGEANT’S SESSION: (Graeme Sansom / Trevor Gorey / Jon Steward)
Bob Davis got the sash and returned to the role in fine fashion.

Win Jones for winning at bowls again!
Jill Elias is getting noticed for NOT being in the Post.
Neil Wilkie for openly trying to raise his profile as guest speaker.
Lindsay Dry for allegedly being the invisible grandparent.
Bruce Fiegert for saving money by using only one vehicle.
Craig James was fined, and recommended he change his profile picture on the Rotary website to something more realistic.
Geoff Cahiff fined as a dentist, and Christmas being a good time for his profession.

And
Jon Steward for winning the Zurich Golf Day and quite correctly being fined for being a soccer hooligan/tragic.

SPEAKER: (Neil Wilkie) – introduced by Susan Watson
Neil shared his experiences on the history of Dalkeith in Scotland during his and wife, June’s visit to see their daughter and new grandchild in Glasgow. Dalkeith was established in 1142. It's hard to summarise Dalkeith’s history as it spans many centuries and many auspicious events.
Henry v111’s invasion of Scotland.
Cromwell doing the same.
Hanging of witches- with a record of 5 in 1 year., Apparently a bad year for old women living on their own!
William Thomas was the last man publicly hanged, and he joined the crowd singing hymns.  (Before the event).
The Dalkeith Rotary Club has a similar demographic to our own Club but perhaps a little older. It was suggested we establish a relationship with the Scottish Club.
