President Hugh Stowell opened the meeting at 6.30pm and everyone sang the National Anthem, led by Ann Bray on violin.
Hugh welcomed guests including Ann Bray’s guests, Audrey Jarvis from MetSO and her mother Nicole Jarvis. Also guest speaker, Paul Kestell’s guest, Les Gunn.
Hugh also announced how wonderful it was so see Kent Warburton back after a six-week convalescence from surgery.

David Miller announced his wife’s famous marmalade is going into production and will shortly be available for sale. He did not deny there may be whisky in it.
ROTARY MOMENTS:
President Hugh acknowledged the presence of performer, Audrey Jarvis, from MetSO and read out a letter of thanks from MetSO extending heartfelt thanks for the Rotary Club of Dalkeith’s generous support of their Young Artist and Orchestra Development Program.
The club’s contribution will have a lasting impact on the lives of WA’s emerging musicians, and MetSO is grateful for the investment in the future of music and for supporting the values of education, community and artistic excellence.
SERGEANT SESSION: The following members were fined by Sergeant Jason:
- The Wine Table, which included Sergeant Jason.
- Arrivals and departures tax, which caught Peter Panek and President Hugh.
- Craig James whose facial hair is making the Sergeant think of Christmas in July.
- Susan Watson for having another letter in The Post.
- Leon Lorenzen for never having any gossip for the Sergeant, but expecting everyone else to pay.
- Susie Rich for her recent exceptional golf scores.
- President Hugh for scoring a VIP parking bay right outside the golf club’s front doors.
GUEST SPEAKER: LIFE TALK BY PAUL KESTELL

Paul Kestell was introduced in an amusing introduction by Lindsay Dry.
Paul gave a wonderful address about his life, which started with him informing everyone he was “born with a bang” when the submarines came into Sydney Harbour during World War II.
The paralysis of his mother while she was still young had a profound effect on the rest of his life.
Paul went to Shore Grammar and undertook an account cadetship interstate. Later in life, he completed a Bachelor of English.
It is when he came back to Sydney from his cadetship, he met his wife on New Year’s Eve.
He joined radio station 2UE and got to work with John Laws. Paul punctuated his address by playing a comedic tape from one of John Law’s shows and showing examples of the LP’s used back in the 60’s.
In 1965 Paul joined 6PR in Perth and one of his big clients was the Perth building society. Throughout his advertising career, Paul helped companies with their strategies using the philosophy that advertising “truth well told”.
After his address, Paul shared that his mantra in life is the 4H’s - Hard work , Helping , Happiness and Health.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION:
Before closing the meeting, President Hugh invited NGC staff member Claire Hazelwood to join him at the lectern and announced that on behalf of all members, the board will be contributing $2,000 towards her fieldwork in Uganda during June work as part of her Thesis Project at UWA.
This involves looking into maternal and infant health, around breastfeeding, and the purpose of the research is to better understand how the national campaigns in Third World countries influence infant feeding behaviours. On a local scale in Uganda, Claire intends that the results will help mothers overcome barriers and increase their confidence in breastfeeding. On a large and more global scale, the aim is for her research to work towards a pilot study to help shape more informed and effective campaigns in the future and to be replicated across other contexts as well.
