John Thornton was with us last night and we do have some singing talent present, so can we improve on last week’s singing Advance Australia Fair.

Heidi Fris from Denmark, Europe. Heidi is a former Exchange Student 1987/1988. She was hosted by Dalkeith Rotary and Win Jones's family was the first host family.
Ami Fris, daughter of Heidi. Amy was also a Rotary Exchange Student to Queensland. She visited our club about 3years ago when she was in Perth for a few days
with a Rotarian family from another club.
Graham Aldous, a former Dalkeith Rotarian (1987-1998). Graham and his wife Sue also hosted Heidi.

SPEAKER: (Mike Haggerty) – introduced by Craig James
Our guest speaker was Mike Haggerty, who gave an illuminating and amusing talk about the sport of curling. Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. Curling originated in Scotland in the early 16th century as a pastime where stones were thrown across frozen lochs and ponds. Indeed a few years ago the oldest curling stone was found when a lake was drained, inscribed with the date 1511 (pictured). Curling has been a medal sport in the Winter Olympic Games since the 1998 Winter Olympics held at Nagano, Japan. Today there are 68 member curling federations from around the world. Mike very kindly gave the Club a copy of the book he’d written on curling, a magnificent history written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the World Curling Federation establishment.
All Curling stones come form 1 uninhabited island off Scotland. They are made of 3 layers of volcanic stone not available anywhere else in the world. Each weigh 44 pounds.
At present the Australian Championships are held in NZ where there is a purpose-built venue, but in 2 years’ time Canberra will host the Championships in our own purpose-built venue.
