President David Ellis welcomed members, and guests to the club meeting this evening; with a special welcome for our own member Ivor Roberts who will be delivering his life talk.
President David invited members and guests to sing the anthem following the note from John Thornton.

Apologies and Leave Of Absence:

There should be 37 members present according to acceptances, with 23 apologies and leave of absences recorded. 
VISITING ROTARIANS and GUESTS:
President David introduced the club’s exchange student, Cadu, whom he warmly welcomed and who will address the club later this evening.
Peter Webb introduced his guest, Brad Noble.

Family and Friends:

Trevor Gorey announced that his wife Alicia is entered in the public choice Liberty Liquors art prize at 42 Bay View Terrace in Claremont.  Trevor encouraged members to participate in the public choice by voting.
John Murdoch advised that his wife Carolyne who works in a voluntary capacity with Legacy has been in touch with Shalom House following the visit by James Hoffman to the club last week and the synergies are being explored.
John Saleeba advised he had met with Starting Over Support (SOS) who are seeking furniture. John said SOS working out of humble premises in Bayswater is seeking wardrobes, fridges, washing machines, microwave ovens, single bed sheets, beds, slow cookers and household items in good condition to assist women, children and their animals in establishing a new home after being displaced by domestic violence or similar life-altering experiences.  Tom Kendall announced that he had been diagnosed with a fairly aggressive, but apparently still contained prostate cancer and was likely to need to remove that organ.  He is happy to discuss this with members who have life experiences to share.

Committee Reports and Announcements:

Charitable Trust: (Russell Hawkins/Tim Humphry): Russell Hawkins advised that wine deliveries will be at 9 am sharp on Wednesday at 168 Stirling Highway Nedlands.
Russell also has limited red wine available, but good supplies of white wine.
Club Secretary’s Report (Craig James): Club Board meeting tonight.
Club Treasurer’s Report (Anthony McGrath): Anthony announced that financial information will be loaded onto the website following the board meeting tonight.

Special Report
Report from Cadu/Carlos delivered an interesting account of his family and his local city in Brazil. His father is a lawyer, his mother a psychologist and his 15-year-old younger brother plays football (soccer) for a Chinese club on a scholarship arrangement.  Cadu admires his parents and hopes to be as good a person as his father who is a Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow.
His home city, “Candido Mota” is an agriculture-based city of about 30,000 population and famous for bikes.  Most famous of its bikes is the Jabiraca which has over 100 wheels and carries 45 people.

Dick Sudlow still has shopping bags for sale and the Florence Rd IGA are supporting us so we must support them.
Nigel is exploring digital options for the coin collection.
Vocational Service: (Peter Marfleet/Tom Kendall):  
Bruce Jeanes reminded members that there will be an opportunity on 7th March to twilight sail on the Duyfken (little dove) for a limit of 24 people at a cost of $125 per head. He is chasing expressions of interest.  A show of hands indicated 22 people were interested.
Foundation and International Service: (Peter Webb/David Smith): No Report.
Membership: (Peter Panek/Lindsay Dry): No report.
Youth: (Kim Smith/Leon Lorenzen): 
Kim advised members that Cadu had achieved a commendation for maths from Shenton College.
Kim advised members the club is seeking applications for Camp Opportunity before 28th October.
Camp Opportunity is a week-long live in a camp for special-needs adult “Campers”, between the ages of 18 and 35 years, to team with an able-bodied carer “Buddy” for a week of adventure as they mix and interact in a fun atmosphere to share new friendships and experiences.

Richard Gorham updated members on the search for sponsorship for the Science and Engineering Challenge next year.  Worley Parsons has come on board with a silver sponsorship and some positive signs have been received from others.
This year the target is to attract 40 schools for the Science and Engineering Challenge at the Showgrounds.
Public relations: (Kevin Jackson/Jon Steward/John Thornton):
Kevin reminded members that Dracula will be this Thursday at His Majesty’s Theatre. He is also seeking permission from members (at their discretion) for them to receive e-mail offers from Luna Cinema.  Kevin recommended, “The Merger” as a good laugh (in the tradition of “The Castle”).

President David reminded us to all discuss Rotary with our friends and invite them to attend a meeting at our Club.

District positions - by club members:
Director. Of Governance and Compliance - Steve Halbert taking over from Angus Buchanan;
Rotary for Melanoma Research [R4MR] - the recent partnership between ECU and Rotary D9455 to 'Eradicate Melanoma Deaths' and MOU signed off on by our PDG Lindsay Dry has required the formation of a joint Board with ECU & Rotary & includes our Anthony McGrath as a Board member
Well done to both members on these significant District appointments.
 
Esther Foundation - our John Saleeba liaising with AG Bruno Fic and through him with the RC Kalamunda and their possibility of a joint project with our RCD and Esther; and also of an intended invite to be extended to our club to a BBQ at the new Esther premises in Kalamunda to see how they've progressed & settled in to their new home.
District 'Club Runner' Website- most impressive and recommended to all RCD club members to 'keep an eye on it' at least weekly - with the many district club and Rl postings eg. Rl confirming its approx. USD$100M in grants to support the global effort to end Polio [plus Rotary's commitment to raise $50M pa for the 3 yrs and to be matched 2-to-1 by the gates Foundation, so yielding $450M for polio eradication] - and how we as a club fit in to this overall picture with our “Coins Collection” next month.

Sergeant Trevor commenced collection with the wine table and the birthday celebrants.  Brian English was fined for Eagles sympathies (in spite of Bulldog grandson Tim), Graeme Sansom for finally playing representative hockey for WA (instead of for other states, which he has done several times previously), and Peter Webb for confusing President David with PP Craig. President David received a fine for omitting to mention Win Jones role as Chairman on the JFF Board, when celebrating Dalkeith members contributing to the District management.
 

         Dr Ivor Roberts

Guest Speaker:

President David invited Stuart Brash to introduce our guest speaker Ivor Roberts to deliver his life history.
Ivor described himself as an Earth Scientist.  He described his life in 10 year “bites”.  He was born in Cremorne on Sydney’s north shore and lived in Mosman for the early years of his life where he was head boy at Mosman primary school and School Captain at North Sydney Technical High School.  He played Rugby Union and Cricket for Mosman. A family tragedy resulted in three of his cousins coming to live with his family, so he effectively grew up in quite a large family.
Ivor met his wife Judy at high school although they were not married until 1980.  Ivor went to University of NSW and completed his Bachelor degree in Applied Geology with Honours and gained a scholarship to complete his PhD at University of Wollongong, although he spent much of his time at CSIRO in North Ryde.
Following his marriage to Judy, Ivor spent the 1980s making babies, while working for the UNSW as a technician, research scientist and working on the mineralogy of clays.
In the 1990’s Ivor joined the WA School of Mines in Kalgoorlie as a lecturer in Geology.  He found Kalgoorlie family-friendly and a great place to bring up children.  Unlike Broken Hill, Kalgoorlie has mining together with grass and trees.  Amongst Ivor’s more famous students are David Flanagan and Bill Beamont.  Ivor joined the Hannan’s Rotary club while he was in Kalgoorlie.
Along the way he completed his MBA and took a position as Regional Manager for the Geological Survey in the Goldfields.  That involved geological mapping of the eastern goldfields and establishing the WA drill core library (one of the world’s finest).
In 2002, Ivor and the family moved to Perth with the Geological Survey. His daughter Georgina completed a degree in Arts and Commerce and son Gareth completed a psychology degree with honours and then a PhD in cognitive science, before moving the University of Sydney where he has a post‑doctoral fellowship. His youngest daughter Briallen completed a degree in architecture, and is currently living in London
In 2010 Ivor was appointed Executive Director of Mineral Titles for WA, which is the largest mineral jurisdiction in the world. In this role where he was able to experience the iron ore boom with a ringside seat.
In more recent time Ivor has been the Executive Director of the Regulatory Group within DMIRS (Department of Mines, Industry, Regulation and Safety), which sits within the Mega Department of Commerce.
Ivor’s hobbies are photography, geology, AusIMM, and a keen desire to see Rottnest Island established as WA’s first geological park.

Question of the Week
 September is World Alzheimer’s Month.
Australian Rotary Health PhD Scholar, Lauren Whyte, is working on her PhD on Alzheimer’s Disease at the University of Adelaide. Her project specifically investigates whether lysosomal dysfunction is a potential risk factor. “Alzheimer’s disease is characterised by the accumulation of two proteins, amyloid beta and tau, in the brain of affected people,” Lauren said.“Both proteins are capable of being degraded in a compartment of cells called the lysosome, which is the cell’s garbage disposal and recycling unit. There is evidence that the lysosome does not work properly during Alzheimer’s disease.”
