Feedback from last week’s meeting was good, the board will review at our next meeting and feedback to the members. Possible survey of members to assist in selecting projects to move forward with into the future.

Holmes a Court collection visit on 10 Oct 2019 (max 30 people).  Invoices for the event have been sent out, $50 per couple.

Jon Steward noted the visit to the Harry Perkins institute occurred.   At the end of the day, it was pretty disappointing in that only 7 attended after 19 put their names on the list!   However, a great visit was had. 

Kevin mentioned that two Post articles have appeared recently.  Barry Evans featured heavily and the medical sea-container to Cambodia.

 Graeme is the Rotary District 9465 Chair.  Rotary started Probus a while ago and now membership exceeds Rotary’s at around 156,000 (Aust & NZ).  Probus is a club for Fun, Fellowship and Friendship in retirement.  A new club is starting up and they need a Rotary sponsor club.  Dalkeith could be it?  It will mean a $400 sponsorship set-up fund.  The first meeting will be at St Albans in Nedlands on Monday 28 October 2019 10:15 am.  Please consider.

Greenbatch collaboration partner opportunity, access to a portion of the $160m pa to be distributed to the community through the Container Deposit Scheme commencing in June 2020. Want to raise $150k by Nov with our contribution $3.5-4k on a per capita basis.
 

Make FASD History – collaboration of Patches and Rotary. This collaborative approach and having Aboriginal people supporting the community has led to the successful decrease of alcohol consumption from 65% to 15% over 8-years for Aboriginal (First Nations People) & non-indigenous pregnant women.

No More Homeless Inc – Eliminate Type 4 Homelessness through affordable housing delivery.
 

St Yarad’s School, Addis Ababa – new school assoc with the orphanage of the same name that has been running for some time and supported by Jacqui Gilmour, speaker 21st October.

Bruce McGeorge introduced the Rev who was the Anglican Dean of Perth from 1990 - 2014.   His work has occurred by “Just saying what is true”!

The title of Rev Shepherd’s talk was “Rome & Canterbury” it is his first PowerPoint presentation.

Rev Shepherd is the representative of the Anglican Church to the Holy See i.e. Vatican City.   This may be a great surprise that this is even a position.  In fact, ecumenism between the Catholic and Anglican Churches was instigated in 1958 by Pope John XXIII reaching out to the Archbishop of Canterbury (Fisher).  They agreed to “Go Forward Together”.  They met again under Pope Paul VI to formalise things in 1966.

The actual Anglican Centre is based at the Palazzi Doria Panfilia which is very near the Pantheon in Rome.    Rev Shepherd then gave a history cum travel log around Rome mentioning the famous landmarks such as;

Two stand out events are witness to the strong relationship between the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church.

Firstly, In 1162 Thomas a Beckett was slaughtered by four knights after he couldn’t abide Henry VIII ruling for clergy to be tried in secular courts.  The robe he was wearing at the time survived and was eventually sent to the Pope as a gift (a little weird)!    However next year it is 850-year anniversary and The Catholic Church is sending the Robe back to The Archbishop of Canterbury for this event.

Secondly, The South Sudanese Civil war has caused 400,000 to be killed and 4 million people displaced from their homes.   The Catholic and Anglican Churches have been very prominent to stop the war and the killings.   To this end, Pope Francis invited the Sudanese warlords to the Vatican to broker a peace deal.  With the Anglicans, his message was - “Peace is the fundamental condition for moving forward” - Stop Fighting! There was very good collaboration between the Churches for this initiative.
