Meeting Notes 15th June 2026

President Jonas Edner opened the meeting at 6.30 pm.

The President thanked Past President Jill Elias for undertaking Acting President duties during his recent absence.

The President welcomed our guest speaker, Diane Wilcox and guest Leighton Chadwick.

The meeting was opened by singing the National Anthem.

 

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

On which date was the Dalkeith Rotary Charitable Trust established?

Answer: It was established on 25 June 2008.

Correctly answered by Bruce Fiegert.

 

FAMILY AND FRIENDS:

• Kevin Jackson noted that his daughter has travelled to Thailand as part of a Curtin University group, which is identifying port facilities in Thailand for the export of rice.

 

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

 

 

Foodbank – Here is a photo of the volunteers on 4 June 2026 who packed over five tonnes of fruit and vegetables at Foodbank!

 

Club fees 2026 - 2027 – Leon Lorenzen spoke about the Club fees for 2026 – 2027, which the Board has decided will be $395. The cost of each meeting dinner will remain $45. Leon also informed members:

· From 1 July 2026, the Nedlands Golf Club will charge the Club for a minimum of 30 meals each week (i.e. will charge for 30 meals even if the actual number of members attending falls below 30). Members are encouraged to make every effort to attend meetings and to bring partners and guests.

· The Club’s guest speaker on 31 August 2026 is the Headmistress of MLC Claremont, Ms Rebecca Clarke. Members are encouraged to bring interested persons, including wives and daughters, to the meeting.

· The Business Lunch will be held on Friday, 4 September 2026 at the Royal Perth Golf Club. Please put the Business Lunch into your calendar now. This year’s speaker is Professor Jacques Eksteen, who will speak about critical minerals and metals.

• ‘Home for Dinner’, 3:30 pm on 24 June 2026 – Anita Bourke is seeking volunteers to assist in preparing a meal under the ‘Home for Dinner’ program at Ronald McDonald House. The meal is prepared for the families of patients at Perth Children’s Hospital. Eight -10 volunteers are needed - please contact Anita directly.

Marmalade – David Miller advised that his wife Beth’s marmalade will be available for sale to members at the meeting next Monday, 22 June 2026.

AFL 2026 – John Bolto informed members that Susie Davis top-scored this week, picking seven winners out of seven games.

 

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES: The following birthday and anniversaries were announced by Susie Rich:

ROTARY MOMENTS:

President Jonas informed members as follows:

· The international Rotary Convention currently taking place in Taiwan is reportedly going well;

· The Perth Rotary Club will celebrate its 100th year in 2027. A lunch is being held on Friday, 19 June 2026, to commence planning for the celebration.

 

ACTING SERGEANT SESSION:  Acting Sergeant Hugh Stowell penalised the following members:

· Bob Davis – a departure tax, imminent trip to Bali.

· West Coast Eagles supporters – for the WCE’s recent one-point loss.

· Socceroos supporters, FIFA 2026 – for some reason connected to Jordan Voss.

· President Jonas – for Sweden’s win against Tunisia in FIFA 2026.

· John Hopkins – for hosting his daughter’s 50th birthday party at the Weld Club.

· David Miller – for producing abundant citrus fruit for marmalade.

· John Murdoch – for benefitting from the drop in diesel prices.

· John Bolto and Ant McGrath – for being well on their way to their 50th wedding anniversaries.

· Leon Lorenzen – to round out the new annual membership fee, $395, to $400.

· Wine Table – the Acting Sergeant graciously picked up the table for this personally.

 

GUEST SPEAKER: Diane Wilcox:

Diane Wilcox, the CEO of the Magic Coat Foundation, provided an update to her earlier address to the Club. Diane’s address included the following:

· Diane’s personal experiences, including being subject to domestic violence, has informed her understanding of and capacity to help others in similar situations;

· In addition to supporting children directly, the Foundation is focusing on helping parents to successfully raise children, for example, by providing nutritious, not junk, food to children. A new documentary has been developed for parents;

· The Magic Coat strategies are now being rolled out to other organisations, including prisons and hospital emergency wards;

· The support of the Rotary Club of Dalkeith has enabled the Foundation to provide a total of 778 Magic Coat Hospital Packs to children.

· Christine Smith has translated the Magic Coat book into French.

Diane expressed her warm thanks to the Club for providing its valuable support to the Foundation.
