ROTARY MOMENTS:
  • Neil Wilkie spoke two weeks ago about the four Vietnam VC winners. President Jill was in Canberra last week and visited the Australian War Memorial where she was fortunate enough to see the VC awards of the Vietnam veterans.
  • Whilst in Canberra President Jill attended the dinner meeting of the Murrumbidgee Rotary Club. Whilst Murrumbidgee is only two years old, it was an amalgamation of 12 members from Canberra East and 20 members from Woden Rotary Clubs, both of which were over 50 years old. The Club was extremely welcoming and asked President Jill to be the guest speaker when there was a late cancellation. The main fundraising areas for Murrumbidgee are through the Canberra Antiques Fair held annually which is organised and staffed by the Club members, the Five Peaks bicycle race where the Club members marshal and the gnome painting at Floriade. The Club orders five thousand unpainted gnomes, two thousand boys, two thousand girls and one thousand special gnomes. These gnomes are painted at Floriade and are a keepsake. The special gnome is a giant secret and is very popular, but it was unveiled last week to the Club members. Also, the Club helps to run the National Science Youth Forum where our Club sponsored a participant, Alexis, this year, who presented to our Club one month ago.

SERGEANT: Jason van Straalen fined the following members:
  • Russell Hawkins for being perfect. Also, for dinging his car again.
  • Graeme Sansom for being 45 minutes early for his Club Services Committee meeting.
  • Steve Halbert for joining the Men’s Shed.
  • Bob Davis for promising the Davis Cup at his property but then letting his son dig up the tennis court.
  • Susan Watson for two letters in The West this week and last.
  • Hugh Stowell for his dirty Aston Martin.
  • Everyone who has not yet paid for the Anniversary Dinner.

GUEST SPEAKER: David de Vos – introduced by John Lindquist

  • David started at the ABC as a graduate cadet in 1968 and has lived and worked all over Australia and many parts of the world.
  • David has made many documentaries on ANZAC Day and played one of them, The Blackboy Hill Training Camp, to end his presentation. It tells of the preparations at Blackboy Hill by the soldiers before they left for Gallipoli via Egypt and of whom many did not return.
  • David lamented that the ABC has sold off its vans in Perth. To cover the ANZAC Day parade the ABC has had to bring two vans with all the equipment from Sydney. It is a worry that the ABC seems to be decreasing the coverage of ANZAC Day commemorations in Western Australia each year.

  • David met Robert Mugabe in Harare when Mugabe was Prime Minister. His handshake was like a wet piece of lettuce, but he exuded power.
  • David encourages everyone to know the stories about West Australians who fought in World War I and to commemorate their feats. Over 32,000 West Australians fought overseas in World War I.
  • Many thanks for your illuminating talk, David.
