NEW MEMBER INDUCTION - JON STEWARD
President Craig called on Past President (PP) Bob Davis to come forward to perform the induction of new member Jon Steward.
President Craig invited Steve Halbert as the nominating member to introduce Jon to the meeting.
Steve introduced Jon, an Insurance Broker, whom he recommended to members as a good addition to our club.
PP Bob Davis read the membership induction and advised Jon he would enjoy the vocational classification of Insurance Broking.
Bob then invited President Craig to come forward and present Jon with his membership badge, documentation and dinner plate.
PE David Ellis presented Jon with his Rotary Tee shirt.
President Craig congratulated Jon on being the world’s newest Rotarian and advised him he would be a member of the Public Relations Committee, asking PR Director Peter Robertson to come forward and meet his new member and accompany him back to his seat.

INDUCTION OF PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS
As an annual donor to the Rotary International Foundation, RCD has the capacity to nominate members or supporters of Rotary for recognition of their contributions to the Community.
The acknowledgement comes in the form of Paul Harris Fellowship recognition.
Richard Sudlow, Pek Goh, and Brian English with President Craig James
Tonight, we shall be honouring three members for their distinguished service to the Community, the Club and Rotary.
President Craig James invited Pek Goh, Brian English, and Richard Sudlow to come forward.
Dr Pek Goh is a retired ENT Surgeon and an Emeritus Consultant at Royal Perth Hospital.
Pek came to Perth in 1974 with his wife Denice.
Pek has always been involved in Community work. Apart from the Rotary Club of Dalkeith, he has been the President as well as a Life member of the Chung Wah Association, the largest and oldest Chinese Association in Perth.
In addition, he has been on The ABC Advisory Council in Perth as well has been a P/T Director of Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs.
Pek commented that has enjoyed his time with Rotary. He found the fellowship especially important. He was constantly amazed by the power of our Rotary Club and he felt the influx of new members in the last few years had given the club a new energy and he felt the future was bright for the club.
Brian is retired from farming in 2006 after 40 years in the Pingelly Community. Brian was invited to join Rotary in 2006 and has enjoyed that pleasure ever since.
After being in the Club for a few years he was asked to become the Vice President but declined because he did not have the experience. In the country, he was involved in Local Government rather than Rotary. The turning point for him in Rotary was when he was the Sergeant. His initial reason for joining Rotary was that he had a much-loved uncle in Victoria who was a Rotarian of some note.
Brian commented that he had particularly enjoyed his time as Sergeant (editor’s comment: who wouldn’t, no fines for a year!). He felt he got a lot more out of the club than he could ever repay and he found the fellowship particularly important. Through Rotary Brian became a volunteer at Solaris and he has found that to be very rewarding.
Richard is a retired businessman formerly involved in the transport and mobile lifting businesses.
Richard joined Rotary Club of Dalkeith in 1997. He has declined leadership positions in Rotary because of roles he had in the transport industry. His Rotary involvement was mainly centred around fundraising where he was involved in the Business Lunch for many years and organised the coin collection for a number of years and recently the Rotary Shopping Bags Projects.
Richard commented that he also enjoyed the fellowship in the club and his contribution to the business lunch. He also slipped in a plug for the Rotary shopping bags.
The President commented that Pek’s Brian’s and Richard’s commitment to Rotary and the Community cannot be questioned and it is with pleasure that I recognise that commitment by the presentation to each Paul Harris Fellowship badges and certificates on behalf of Rotary International and the Club.

TREASURER REPORT
Anthony said the club had had a successful year financially. Total income of $93k in cash and in kind. He went on to detail the major money-raising events and the major donations made during the year. He said that the club was expecting to raise an additional $20k in FY19 to support the Science and Engineering forum. He was very impressed with the organisation shown by Richard Gorham and his team in their endeavours to raise these funds.

ATTENDANCE
Attendance was 40 members for 67%. Kent also commented that Craig had achieved 100% attendance during the year and that this was the first time this had been achieved for a number of years.

REPORTS
Club Service:
A successful year with 10 committee meetings held with very good attendance and participation by the committee members. Special thanks to Bob for doing the minutes for the year.
Committee successfully organised Christmas Cocktail Party, GWCTD, Family BBQ, Anniversary Dinner as well as all the weekly meetings. The Christmas and Anniversary functions came in under budget.
Roster notification changes appear to have worked well, much higher attendance to duty roster, thanks to Kent W for organising.
Catering numbers have seen a large improvement with better compliance by members to the apology system, this has resulted in a cost reduction for the club.
New initiatives were the launching of the Club Historian through Ian Ritchie and the start-up of the new website, still a work in progress.
Lastly, want to thanks John Hopkins for his great efforts in pursuing speakers for the club and Peter Panek for his follow up of these speakers to ensure they arrive on the evening.
Community Service
David was absent so Craig gave his report. Committee organised following events; Neometals golf day which raised more than $15k for Esther, Cans for Christmas which this year included 3 other Perth clubs plus 4 clubs in Geraldton, RCD golf day, wine night and the Greening Australia tree planting. Overall a very successful year for Community Services.
Vocational Service
Peter was absent so Craig gave his report. The committee organised a number of very successful vocational visits including the very popular Corsini collection visit, the John Curtin art gallery visit, the Fremantle Sea Rescue visit and the Kings Park Botanic Garden visit.
The committee also organised the Pride in Workmanship awards and the new Vocational Excellence award. Again, a very successful year for this committee.
CHARITABLE TRUST
Russell was absent so Ken gave a brief update. Giving season has been very successful and trust is now approaching $750k in funds under management.
Rotary Foundation and International Service
Ken gave a brief update. The international dinner was again organised by Pek Goh and was well attended. The John Fawcett grant is progressing well and hoping to be finalised in the next week or two. Thanks to the committee for their work during the year.
Public Relations
Peter gave a brief update. The relationship with the Post has grown during the year and we are getting regular coverage though sometimes they fail to include Rotary in the by-line. The big project for the year has been getting the Rotary shopping bags project up and running. All go now and thanks very much to Richard Sudlow for his efforts in procuring the bags and to Albert for getting the website active. Please buy!
Membership and New Members
David gave a brief update. No members lost this year. The target was to add 6 members which we have achieved including our first female member, welcome Anita. The committee also supported the District Conference organisation by following up other clubs and getting commitments for attendance to the conference. We learnt through this process to not always believe the commitments of a club president, his team may not follow his lead.
Youth
Kim was absent so Craig gave a brief update. Kim and his committee worked hard on youth projects during the year and the club achieved more this year than ever before in Youth initiatives. We have sponsored an outgoing student in Holly Frederickson and have an incoming student in Carlos arriving in a few weeks’ time. Many other projects supported during the year.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
44 meetings, 29 speakers, six new members, $88,000 raised, donations in excess of $95,000 (excluding the Trust), a highly successful District Conference, four informative Vocational Visits, increased support for Youth, recognition of excellence in the Community, recognition of member's contributions, assuaging our environmental-friendly side through tree planting and the production of"must have" reusable shopping bags, the first RI Global Grant application, a thriving Charitable Trust and progress towards a mastery of the second verse of the National Anthem.
By all accounts, the 2017/ 2018 Rotary Year has been a good one for the Rotary Club of Dalkeith. Additionally, we bathed in the glory of being the Home of District 9455 as the Club of District Governor Lindsay Dry who we have proudly supported throughout the year and on whose behalf was organised the widely acclaimed District Conference.
At the commencement of the Rotary Year, I identified fellowship and member engagement as the fundamental elements of the Club's past success and committed to building on that base. I also espoused that there should be a greater effort to put more knowledge of Rotary into the Club.
Through the efforts of the willing, committed and competent group of directors, the Club's Committees have achieved stronger fellowship and the opportunities for members to get their hands dirty with new and old projects. I also confidently observe there is already a greater knowledge of Rotary amongst our newer members.
Various Committee reports have been given tonight which will be included in a formal report to be published.
Special Roles
Several significant activities, vital to the Club's operations are conducted in the background which deserves special acknowledgement:
- Tom Langley has continued to manage the Club website, regularly updating it and transitioning to the new Rotary Specific Club Runner platform. The Club is likely to be operating on Clubrunner by August 2018;
- communication to the Club via the Bulletin has been assured through the efforts of Tom Kendall and a few deputies;
- the role of Property Officer was performed by Bruce McGeorge until December when it was taken over by Richard Renshaw;
- a leading factor in the Club's success is the enjoyment and satisfaction which Members receive from the varied presentations by weekly Speakers. The daunting challenge of identifying, arranging and confirming Speakers has once again been managed by John Hopkins. It is good to see John at meetings whenever he is in Australia;
The efforts of these silent few are greatly appreciated.
The role of Sergeant provides both entertainment and useful finances for the Club. In 2018 seven members fulfilled the role led principally by Peter Panic and supported, during his absence, by Graeme Sansom, Bob Davis, Stuart McCoubrie, Ray House, Richard Ranshaw and Kim Smith. I express my thanks to those members.
Recognition
Member engagement is a critical factor in any organisation. Equally, recognition of contributions to the organisation is also important. Six Members' contributions to Rotary and the community were recognised in 2018;
- Anthony McGrath;
- John Thornton;
- Gary Deinhoff;
- Peck Goh;
- Richard Sudlow; and
- Brian English.
Partner Support
The Club continued to receive the encouraging support of the members' partners, 10 of whom attended the Rotary W.A. Ladies Seminar in August 2017 and 20 of whom attended a Dalkeith Rotary Ladies Soirée in November. As well, attendances at select Dinner meetings and special functions were strong.
Rotary Learning
Consistent with the President's wish to introduce more Rotary into the Club;
- 10 members attended the Rotary Leadership Seminars four of whom completed all three levels and six of whom have partially completed;
- 23 members attended the District 9455 Conference in Geraldton;
- 6 members attended the District 9455 Assembly;
- the Club was represented at the District Grants Seminar and the separate Membership Forum;
- David Ellis attended the compulsory Presidents-Elect Training Session
Special Projects
Standing outside of the mainstream committee activities are several projects which are being managed by Club Members.
- John Saleeba maintains a watching brief on the Ester Foundation - the Club's principal beneficiary. The Esther Foundation took possession of the new property at St Emilie’s in Kalamunda on 22 June 2018. Funds provided by the Club in previous years and in the current year will be used by Esther to install Photo Voltaic Cells to generate electricity;
- Dalkeith is the lead Club for the Claremont Men's Shed Project which has attracted support from the Rotary Clubs of Nedlands, Matilda Bay, West Perth and Subiaco along with Freemasons Lodge, Fremantle. Trevor Gorey is the Club's representative on the Project leadership group and is the principal driver;
- David Smith is working with The Tabatha Foundation to deliver medical equipment to Nokor Tep Women's Hospital in Phnom Phen.
- Neil Wilkie continues to be the Club's face at the Dalkeith Primary School which is supported in a small way by the Club through the provision of book prices.
Conclusion
I thank the members of the Rotary Club of Dalkeith Board for their support and hard work over the past year.I think the Members for the opportunity of being able to serve and represent you in the role of President.I congratulate all on the Club's achievements in 2017/2018.
I pass the stewardship of the Club to David Ellis this evening with confidence that the Club will continue to perform well.

SERGEANT
Peter took on his final session and pushed to the line to make FY18 a very productive year for the Sergeant, there were groans from the crowd!
Peter put on his Fez, acquired in Morocco along with food poisoning, and put his contribution in the tin. Birthday tax for Graeme S. Craig and Bruce celebrated anniversaries so contributed. Pek and Gary received a travel tax. All West Coast supporters were taxed for their loss to Sydney. Footy tax was imposed on Stuart, Kevin, and Anthony. New house tax went to David Ellis’ daughter. No badge tax to John B and Pek. Other fines handed out but I missed those, it was too hectic to get them all. We will all wish Peter well in his new role and Trevor (new sergeant) commented that he would not miss Peter next year.

DAVID ELLIS
David Ellis, you have been chosen by the Rotary Club of Dalkeith to assume the high office of Club President for the year 2018 /2019 as we believe you possess the quality of leadership and the esteem and confidence of your fellow members.
You have served Rotary and the Club with distinction and in a commendable manner and you have a working knowledge of the Constitution and By-Laws of the Club and the Object of Rotary.
You have attended the President-Elect’s Training Seminar and the District Assembly as required in preparation for your term in office. You have undertaken to give the time and effort necessary to lead and carry on the work of the club in a meaningful and dignified manner.
We, the members of the Rotary Club of Dalkeith pledge to you our support and loyalty during the year as together we strive to achieve the ideals of Rotary Service.
I now have pleasure in presenting you with your President’s lapel badge and the Regalia of Office and inducting you as the President for the year 2018/2019

INCOMING PRESIDENT
David said a Thank you to outgoing Committees and praised Craig’s sensible and affable manner in managed the board and the meetings during the year. He thought Craig’s theme of putting more Rotary into our meetings had worked during the year.
David commented that there had been a lot of engineers in the President’s role recently, Tim, Tom, and Peter prior to Craig. David hoped to give some small respite to the club this year before John Bolto and Anthony McGrath took us back to engineers in years to come.
David plans to form a think tank during the year to try and hatch some big adventurous projects for the club to fully utilize the exceptional talent now in the club, more on this in the coming weeks.
Lastly, David unveiled the updated Presidents board with Craig shown at the top of a new column. Much applause.
