Meeting Notes  4th May 2026

Guest Speaker Amy Duong

President Jonas Edner opened the meeting at 6.30 pm with a hearty greeting of MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU.

Welcome to our guest speaker, Amy Duong, and to our guests, Michael Ryan and Margaret Pride.

The meeting was opened by singing the National Anthem.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

The AFL has granted a 19th licence for a team to start in 2028. What is the name of the team?

Answer: Tasmania Devils

Correctly answered by Ross Mackellar.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY:

President Jonas announced the wonderful news that he and Di are to become grandparents in September. Congratulations!

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Lift the Lid walk

Anita Bourke spoke about the Lift the Lid walk held at UWA on Saturday, 18 April 2026. About 100 people walked, and over $8,900 was raised! Well done, Anita, on a successful campaign to raise awareness and funds.

Science and Engineering Challenge

Richard Gorham spoke about the Science and Engineering Challenge to be held next week, from Monday, 11 to Friday, 15 May at Murdoch University. Club volunteers are welcome all week but particularly needed on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Please email Ann Bray at perthsec3.1416@gmail.com if you can help out. Richard gave big thanks to Ann for the long hours of hard work that she has put in organising the volunteers.

 • Red Shield Appeal – Craig James will be collecting for the Red Shield Appeal next Monday 11 May for the Salvation Army, he was the best collector of funds last year in the State, let’s ensure he retains that title by digging deep.

Collectible cans – John Bolto announced that the State Government has said that over 5.2 billion containers had been recycled for cash since the scheme started. Of that, a quarter of a million bottles and cans had been collected by the Club, under the initiative of John Bolto and the amazing collecting power of Susan Watson. Congratulations, Susan and John and your army of collectors.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES:

President Jonas presented Susan Watson with a flower for her birthday this Wednesday and thanked her for spreading happiness with her celebratory flowers.

Then, the following birthday and anniversaries were announced by Susan:

Partner’s birthday:

Kim Bolto on 2 May 2026

Anniversaries:

Neil and June Wilkie 54 years on 28 April 2026

Kevin and Janice Jackson 55 years on 29 April 2026

Richard Gorham and Catherine Cowan 50 years on 1 May 2026

ROTARY MOMENTS:

Endoscopy unit in Madagascar – The Charitable Trust donated $5,000 towards the costs of building an endoscopy unit in Madagascar. Dr Digby Cullen writes that he made an Australian Doctors for Africa gastroenterology visit to Madagascar last week. He was quite euphoric seeing the foundations of the new endoscopy unit being dug at CHUJRA (the main public surgical/cancer/paediatric surgical hospital in Antananarivo). The building is on track to be finished by Christmas this year and opened early in the New Year.

• John Fawcett Foundation - The quiz night raised $4,500 and the Charitable Trust donated $5,500, a total of $10,000, to the John Fawcett Foundation in memory of Win Jones. We received this email from the Foundation:

“On behalf of the John Fawcett Foundation, we once again thank the Rotary Club of Dalkeith and the Dalkeith Rotary Charitable Trust Foundation for your kindness and continued support, which has enabled the delivery of much-needed eye health services, free of charge, to those in greatest need throughout Indonesia.

I only met Win for the last year of his life – but it was both a privilege to meet such a lovely man and experience his passion for JFF.

Thank you for dedicating these funds raised to support the legacy of Win Jones and his unwavering commitment to the John Fawcett Foundation.

Your generosity to JFF over time has had an enormous impact on so many people who would otherwise be unable to access or afford essential eye health care and sight-restoring surgeries.”

Many thanks to Hugh for running the quiz night and for suggesting the proceeds go to the John Fawcett Foundation in Win’s memory. We really appreciate your hard work, Hugh.
