CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
- The business lunch has been postponed due to the unavailability of the speaker. Despite efforts to find someone else to speak, it was too short notice. Hopefully, an announcement of the new date and speaker will be confirmed shortly. Please let your friends who intended to attend know of the postponement of the lunch.
- The Rotary Club of Perth’s PolioPlus dinner will be held on World Polio Day, Tuesday, 24 October, at the Parmelia Hilton, the cost is $90. - The Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner event will be held on Saturday, 28 October. There are enough hosts who have offered their houses, and now more guests are needed. Please contact Hugh Stowell to express interest.
- There are still places for volunteers at Foodbank on Thursday 12 October, please contact Anthony McGrath if you are available.
- Kim Smith reported on the Youth Committee events coming up, including that a first year engineering student will be sponsored by the Club at RYLA in January 2024; an Interact Club is being set up at Shenton College of which our Club is a co-sponsor; a student will be sponsored to attend the National Science Forum; the Science and Engineering Challenge will be held from 29 April to 3 May 2024.
- Leon Lorenzen is sending off the Polio funds raised by our Club later this week. We are approximately $300 short of the target reached last year, please consider donating funds to this cause if you have not already done so. Please put the funds into the project account, the details of which are:

- International Day of Peace 21 September – Neil Wilkie represented the Club and attended the Dalkeith Primary School for a ceremony at the Rotary Peace Pole.
- Golf Day – City Rotary is organising the inaugural Rotary WA Golf Team Challenge at Gosnells on Friday, 20 October. Teams of four, Ambrose rules, $2,000 prize money for first place. Please refer to the email sent to all Club members on 2 October with details or the latest District newsletter.

GUEST SPEAKER: Professor Kliti Grice, Mass Extinction Events – introduced by Bruce Fiegert

- Kliti Grice is an internationally renowned organic geochemist and world-leading authority on molecular fossil and stable isotope geochemistry.
- Kliti obtained her PhD from the University of Bristol and undertook a post-doctoral fellowship from the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research. She has been at Curtin University since 1998 and has supervised and mentored 40 PhD students.
- There have been five mass extinction events. Kliti has focused her study on two extinction events, the first being 252 million years ago, when 96% of marine life and 70% of terrestrial life were wiped out. The cause was that the Earth was 6C warmer and there were no ice caps hence the oceans were devoid of oxygen. Pangae was a supercontinent and the waters around the mass were sluggish. This resulted in lower oxygen which meant that photosynthesis occurred with hydrogen chloride which made for killer sea water.
- The second focus of Kliti’s study has been on when the non-avian dinosaurs were rendered extinct by a meteor hitting Earth 66 million years ago, when 75% of all plants and animals were destroyed. The meteor's crater was 180 kilometres wide, and a tsunami, the height of the BHP building swept the Earth. Through core drilling to incredible depths, various markers have indicated the tsunami effects, combustion from fires from volcanoes and concretion, which allows for fossilisation within a mass of sediment.

- She has traced the molecular structure of preserved cholesterol by studying microbes in fossils. Kliti’s research has shown that some major biological extinction events can be traced to factors intrinsic to the Earth's systems rather than external factors such as asteroid impacts.
