Question of the Week:

Q: Who can you blame for introducing singing to Rotary Club meetings and what was his profession?

A: The tradition of singing at Rotary club meetings began in 1905 with Rotarian Harry L. Ruggles, of the Rotary Club of Chicago. New Rotary clubs formed, and the practice of singing at club meetings caught on. He was a publisher.

Correctly answered by Peter Panek who had done his research.  Prior to this, there were a few false starts by people who did NOT do their research.

Recognition of John Thornton  OAM
Peter Panek  (who nominated John Thornton)  mentioned the reasons for John being awarded this honour.   John has dedicated his life to the Arts.  In more recent times John was partly responsible for the Regal Theatre being entrusted to the people of WA.  John has served on this Trust since 1986.

John Thornton gave a typically humorous and humble speech.  He mentioned that his first foray into the entertainment industry was as a very young boy entertaining the troops before they deployed to the D-Day Landings in June  1944.
(ed:  A well-deserved honour)

Guest Speaker:    Jennifer Turner  -  Anglicare Foyer Oxford
Jennifer was introduced by club members Peter Webb.
Jennifer spoke about Anglicare’s Homelessness program,  Foyer Oxford.  Salient points from her presentation are below;
  • Anglicare is a pretty large and complex organisation.  One part is Foyer Oxford which is their homelessness helping arm.
  • In WA  9,000 people are classed as homeless on a nightly basis.
  • A quarter of this number are young people.  Hence Anglicare concentrate on helping this segment of younger than 25 years old.
  • To this end, they have a purpose-built facility in Oxford Street which provides accommodation to young people.  It is transitional housing with assistance to get people enough skills to get into employment and live independently.  It can be for periods of up to 2 years although the average stay is 13 months.
  • The stay involves a commitment to either be employed,  in education or training.
  • The facility caters for around 90 people.  They have stable accommodation and are provided with a caseworker who assists them to become independent.  The idea is to provide training for Real Life.
  • The facility is next door to North Metro TAFE  which is very handy.
  • Funding is half Govt and half philanthropic.  They are always looking for more funding!
  • Anglicare provides a range of wrap-around services to assist.
  • Young homelessness is usually a result of family breakdown.  Typically this involves a degree of family violence.
  • Foyer Oxford  successes;  Past 5 years  660 people have been supported.  91% have moved into positive long term independent living.  83% of young people are employed or training.
  • Hence it is a very worthwhile and successful program.

Pres John thanked Jennifer for letting us know about the great work her team are doing.  A real credit to them and Anglicare.
