President Anthony McGrath has developed a cold and rather than potentially infecting any members has chosen to stay at home.  Past President John Bolto stepped into the breach and opened the meeting at 6.30 pm on with a rousing singing of Advance Australia Fair which was led by our song master John Thornton OAM.  The Club needs more practice.

 

Past President John raced through the reports and had to be reminded that some people actually had a report to present.

Club Service: (Peter Panek) - Advised the members that the Guess Who is Coming to Dinner evening is on Saturday 26th September. Members should note that this is a long weekend, but as most of us are retired this should not pose too many difficulties. Members will be asked to register their attendance to the dinner via email so that they can also confirm their special dietary requirements at the same time. Please look out for your email.

 

Community Service: Nigel Johnson informed the meeting that the Cans for Christmas will follow a different format this year. It will be held on Saturday 5th December and will require that the public deliver their donations to one of several locations around the suburb where they can drive through and not via a can pick up as has been carried out traditionally.

John Thornton, in celebration of his 85^th Birthday. John is just lucky it only cost him $5 and not $2 for every year he has celebrated.

Mike was introduced by Pek Goh as being a Captain of Industry and left the rest to Mike.

(A brief synopsis of Mike’s talk follows, and apologies to Mike if some of the details are incorrect as there was so much information I could not keep up).

 

Mike was born in Geraldton on 27/1/1948, precisely 14 years after his parents were married on 27/1/1934.

The family moved to Minora Road Dalkeith in 1952

Mike attended Dalkeith Primary from 1954-1960, Scotch College from 1961-1965 and UWA from 1966-1969.

 

He joined Price Waterhouse in 1970 and worked there for 35 years, 23 of those years as a partner. During his time at PW, he travelled to over 30 countries carrying out his various roles. Some of the early assignments included New York 1976-1977; London 1977-79.

Mike was part of the PW Continuing Education Task Force and was promoted to Partner in 1981.

 

Mike married Jenny Vine in 1988 and they brought 2 children into the world.

Mike became a Managing Partner in 1993 and was seconded to the Jakarta office for 3 years from 1997. Those 3 years in Indonesia were the subject of a very substantial political turmoil with the changing of the guard of the country President.

 

In 1998 PW merged with Coopers and Lybrand to become what is today known as PWC.

He returned to Perth in March 2000 and was appointed as Asia Pacific Independence Leader.

Mike retired from PWC in 2006 to care for his terminally ill wife and care for their 2 teenage children.

 

Mike happily remarried in 2008 to Vicky Stewart.

In finishing, Mike thanked Hugh Stowell for his assistance in the preparation of Mike’s PowerPoint presentation. He also noted the very valuable contribution to the running of the Weld Club which Hugh has made.

 

Past President John thanked Mike for an informative and entertaining talk and the Club showed its appreciation in the usual way with a resounding round of applause.
