Meeting Notes 12th May 2025
Guest Speaker Lisa Campbell
President Hugh Stowell opened the meeting at 6.30pm and then Ann Bray led everyone on her violin in singing the National Anthem.
Hugh welcomed our guest speaker, Lisa Campbell, Team Leader, Science and Engineering Challenge, Newcastle University and her assistant, Alice.
A warm welcome was also extended to Richard Gorham’s partner, Catherine Cowan.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
There has been one woman who has been married to two Presidents of two different countries. Who is she?
Answer: Graca Machel, married to Samora Machel of Mozambique then to Nelson Mandela of South Africa.
Correctly answered by Craig James.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
No news of family or friends was brought forward.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES:
Susan Watson announced that Pek Goh’s wife, Denice Goh will be celebrating her birthday on 18 May 2025.

CLUB AND COMMITTEES:
Anita Bourke announced there is a “Lift the Lid” Walk for Mental Health on Sunday 22 June that Rotary Clubs across the state are supporting. Anita will be gathering more information and a circular will be sent around asking members to support this event.
Jonas Edner announced that the three students sponsored by the club have now completed their Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) weekend and arrangements will be made for them to come and speak at a club meeting on their experience.

SERGEANT SESSION: The following members were fined by Acting Sergeant Graeme.
  • Richard Gorham because his partner, Catherine, spilled her drink over the Sergeants notes, making his original set of fines illegible.
  • The Wine Table led by Craig James.
  • John Martin and Peter Marfleet for sitting in the same spot each week.
  • Ross MacKellar for causing confusion at the registration table about paying for his meal.
  • Ann Bray for wearing pink socks.
  • John Lindquist (dobbed in by Paul Kestell) for missing Paul’s life talk in two week’s time.
  • Susan Watson for playing too well at golf.
GUEST SPEAKER:   Lisa Campbell, Team Leader, from the Newcastle University here for the Science and Engineering Challenge this week was introduced by Richard Gorham.

Lisa opened her address with footage of the “Bridge Challenge”, which is popular with the students, and then presented footage of some of the other science and engineering challenges. There are eight activities each school group of 32 students must complete.

Last year in WA, 38 schools encompassing 951 students and 144 volunteers participated. Lisa extended a big thank you to the Rotary Club of Dalkeith, because with only a team of 7 university staff to look after the events across Australia, the support of clubs like RCD are what make it a success. The event has been held in Perth since 2006 and RCD took over running it in 2018, and it has grown from strength to strength.

29% of students who participate are influenced to pursue science, 55% are in remote locations and 99% of schools indicate they would return again. Members are encouraged to out to Murdoch University during the rest of the week and see this wonderful event first hand.
