image
Susan Morrow arrived in Perth in 1997 from the USA and has worked in fundraising for 14 years before joining Ronald McDonald (RMcD)
Susan explained RMcD provide supported accommodation to help families who live remote (>100kms) from Perth attend their children while they undergo treatment in Perth. It's a family centred care model based on the fact families do better together. RMcD started in 1974 in Philadelphia. There are now 379 centres in 45 countries. In Australia, there are 14 centres. In WA, Lyn Baker started the centre and there is now a 47-bedroom House that opened in 2014 in Nedlands located near QE2 Medical Centre. There are also 14 bedrooms at PCH that opened in 2018 along with family rooms at PCH, Kulinga Moot Mia at RMcD house for indigenous families and at Peel Health campus. There is also the Bass Family Foundation learning centre that offers play and learning for children and the RMcD Learning program that aims to bridge the gap for students who miss out on school due to medical illness. RMcD also offers a Retreat Program in Busselton and Bunbury for families to re-connect. Last year they helped 1804 families who spent 18,570 nights in accommodation and 83 families stayed at the retreats. The annual WA budget is $10m. McDonalds provides 14% of this, the WA govt 13% with the balance from fundraising. A room can be sponsored for $11,000 pa.
