Tony Ciallella introduced himself as a member of the Rotary Club of Perth and a Director of CERI. At the invitation of President David, he described CERI as the product of the efforts of a number of Rotary Clubs and noted that former State Governor and Rotarian Dr Ken Michael is the Patron of CERI.
Byron Williamson from the Rotary Club of Western Endeavour introduced himself.

Family and Friends:
Tom Kendall announced he had recently become a proud grandfather again with the arrival of Beau Francis Kendall last Wednesday. He is a relatively small 48 cm and 2.9 kg, but he was hungry and looking to catch up with the rest of the family.
Trevor Gorey passed on to members Alicia’s gratitude to all members and their family who voted for her painting in the $50,000 Art prize. Unfortunately, she did not win.
Richard Sudlow informed members that Craig James and John Murdoch were recently recognised by the WA Rowing Club for their service as Boat Race Officials.
David Miller proudly announced the arrival of his first grandchild on Tuesday 23rd October.
John Bolto advised members that Brian English had fallen out of his rubbish bin into a window frame and was indisposed as a result. John speculated he will be back at Rotary next week to pay an appropriate fine for mistaking a rubbish bin for a wool press.
Chris Cole announced that Steve Plain had been awarded the Australian Geographic “Adventurer of the Year 2018” Award.
Win Jones asked those members photographed with Amy Fris some weeks ago if they would be happy to have the photo published in Rotary Down Under. They agreed.
Special Announcement:
Rotarian Byron Williamson addressed members on the Early Act Club that the Rotary Club of Western Endeavour was sponsoring at the Rosalie Primary school in Subiaco. Byron gave examples of the activities undertaken by the student members and the joys the children experience being involved in Early Act.
Byron is the Rotarian Advisor to the Rosalie club and he stressed the flexibility the District allows in implementing Early Act. He gave a series of tips to members while encouraging Dalkeith to explore the opportunity of such a club at Dalkeith Primary school. He expressed willingness to advise Dalkeith members who are interested in helping to establish a club at Dalkeith Primary.
The key tips from Byron are: let the children run the club; support the club financially; support the school; recognise the efforts of both children and teachers and reward results.
Early Act is suitable for Year 4 upwards.

Charitable Trust: (Russell Hawkins/Tim Humphry): The AGM of the trust will be held on the 19th November and a good roll-up is required in order to change the constitution to comply with the new legislation.

John reminded members of the Guess Who Is Coming To Dinner (GWICTD) which is coming up on Saturday 10th November 2018 that it is VERY poor form to not turn up if you accept the invitation. He said that registration is via the website and you must DECLINE if you are not coming. If you accept, please do not drop out at the last minute.
Richard Ranshaw advised members that he is still seeking orders for fruitcakes. He has already received the cakes
John also passed around a board for members to clarify their attendance at the Calcutta night next Monday.
Community Service: (Nigel Johnson/Steve Halbert):
Coin Collection last Saturday; Nigel thanked the many members who had assisted and reported that the club had collected about $2,450 on the day after costs.
Bag sales – We still have 400 bags to sell.
Cans for Christmas will be handed out in the two days after Sunday 2nd December and collected on Sunday 9th December before 10 am. Seven (7) other Rotary Clubs are engaged with Dalkeith this year and Nigel is meeting with them at his place tomorrow evening.

Foundation and International Service: (Peter Webb/David Smith): Peter congratulated Anita for the sensational pre-screening at the Windsor to support Polio. After Peter had announced the collection of copious funds. He confessed that he had chaotically combined all Anita’s carefully segregated and notated collection envelopes into one pile of money and had absolutely no idea how much money was raised nett of costs. Anita rose to advise that in spite of Peter’s efforts to create disorder, she had a list of those that still owe money. So pay up!

Peter reminded members of the North Perth joint meeting Calcutta on the 5th November. He is still seeking more silent auction items.
Peter is still seeking a volunteer for SUPER SUNDAY 11th November to count dogs, cats, bikes and all manner of things. This will be a significant fundraiser. Albert put himself forward as the 20th volunteer.
Youth: (Kim Smith/Leon Lorenzen):
The Science and Engineering Challenge next year is going from strength to strength with 45 schools accepted and $57k in sponsorship organised which will ensure the viability of the project. Members were reminded what a great cause it is, and Kim lauded the efforts of Richard Goreham and Michael Bisset who have done great work getting the project to its current point. Members can show their appreciation be volunteering for and attending the event.
Kim advised members the club is still seeking applications for Camp Opportunity until 25th November.
Camp Opportunity is a week-long live in camp for special-needs adult “Campers”, between the ages of 18 and 35 years, to team with an able-bodied carer “Buddy” for a week of adventure as they mix and interact in a fun atmosphere to share new friendships and experiences.

Trevor announced the club is awaiting anxiously the outcome of meetings between the RAS and WAPC.

President David reminded us to all discuss Rotary with our friends and invite them to attend a meeting at our Club.
A scribe is required to take club meeting notes from 5th November until 27th November to replace long-term Bulletin Bunny Tom Kendall who will be indisposed during that period. This is an opportunity for an imaginative new member to create club history in their own style.

The wine table celebrated; President David celebrated a cancerous gaffe at the coin collection; Peter Panek celebrated his flautist style; Barry and Terry celebrated their birthdays; coin collection no-shows paid penance; the Sergeant sought retribution on all who did not suffer as he did for the film at the Windsor; raffle wins (various raffles) were celebrated by John Saleeba, Ivor Roberts and Peter Panek; Bruce Fiegert celebrated winning bowls to become a golfer; PP Craig celebrated travelling so slowly to Nannup that the tortoise arrived before he did, and Richard Ranshaw celebrated taking a phone call at the duty roster desk.
Tom Kendall introduces Dr Carolyn Williams
Guest Speaker:
President David invited Tom Kendall to introduce our guest speaker Dr Carolyn Williams from the Centre for Entrepreneurial Research and Innovation (CERI).
Tom announced that Carolyn completed her undergraduate degree at UWA with majors in Biochemistry and Pharmacology before heading to London and completing a PhD in Molecular Genetics with focus on Cystic Fibrosis. Carolyn spent 10 years in London.
Tom noted that CERI has the objective of Inspiring World-Class Innovation in Western Australia. He expressed hope they are able to answer that eternal question:

Dr Carolyn Williams described the doctoral students and post‑doctoral fellows she works with as awesome individuals who know an enormous amount about a very little. CERI runs a mentor program for PhD students to make them ready as leaders of the future, creating the jobs of the future for our children and grandchildren.
The objectives of CERI are to:
- Diversify the WA economy
- Address the “Paradox of the Plenty”
Dr Carolyn Williams
CERI is attempting to take University research out of the laboratory into the world. CERI is all about the hand-up rather than the hand-out. Simple things like protecting the IP before publishing. Treating problems as opportunities. Translating research into opportunities for Western Australian.
CERI runs Boot Camps several times a year and currently has 8 start-ups in their office. None have yet flown the nest although that remains the objective.
Carolyn spoke about the mentoring roles that are available and the CERI system of multiple mentors. She expressed enthusiasm for hosting Dalkeith members at CERI for a visit.
President David thanked Carolyn very much for spending the time enlighten us on CERI and Tony for attending in support. Each was presented with a Rotary cake and a Rotary bag.
