QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
What are the four types of aerodynamics?
Answer:
The four forces of flight are lift, weight, thrust and drag.
Correctly answered by Ken Ilett. I am glad he knew the answer.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS:

  • Stewart Brash’s funeral service will be held this Thursday 9 May at 10:30am at the Simplicity Chapel, 442 Scarborough Beach Road, Osborne Park

  • Anthony and Shelley McGrath’s daughter, Courtney, married Jake Dunning last weekend at Busselton and it was a beautiful occasion.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES:
Only one birthday this week, that of our invaluable member, Susan Watson, whose birthday it is today.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
  • The Business Lunch will be held on Friday 9 August at the Royal Perth Golf Club in South Perth. This year’s speaker is Paul Holmes a Court. Please start spreading the word and organising your tables.
  • David Miller is making orange and grapefruit marmalade at $7 a jar. All profits go to the Rotary Club. Please email David on miller@iinet.net.au to order your jars, specifying the quantities of either orange or marmalade. If you have any empty jars, please take off the labels and bring them to Rotary for David.
  • A 2009 Semillon and a 2010 cabernet merlot have been sourced from down south and are exceptional value at $140 for a dozen. An email has gone out to all members. To order please email Russell Hawkins on russell@chippenham.com.au
Only after receiving the invoice, please transfer funds to the Club account and put your name and ‘wine’ in the description line. Please support the Club by purchasing these special wines. Thanks to John Hopkins and Russell for sourcing the wines.
  • Kim Smith spoke of the need to find one or two host families to take Mathilda from the end of May until her return home to Belgium in early July. Please let Kim know on kimchris@bigpond.net.au if you are able to help for any length of time.

ROTARY MOMENTS:

  • Kim Smith and Richard Gorham spoke of the success of the Science and Engineering Challenge held last week. 38 schools with over 1,100 students participated in the week. Christ Church Grammar School won overall by a mere 0.11 points in over 4,000 points over the second placed school. There were two new activities this year, the wind turbine and the fish trap.

  • Many thanks to the members and their family and partners who were volunteers at the Science and Engineering Challenge last week, Michael Snell, Ann and Igor Bray, Anita and John Bourke, Kevin Jackson, Kim Smith, Michael Bisset, John Bolto, George Thornton, Lindsay Dry, John Lindquist, Richard Ranshaw, David Miller, Stephanie Fryer-Smith, Anthony McGrath, Russell Hawkins, Peter Panek and Michael and Jill Elias. The event would not be possible without the behind the scenes work from Michael Bisset obtaining

  • Anita Bourke proposed that Grandcarers WA (which has recently changed its name from Grandparents Raising Grandchildren) be the annual focus charity of the
           Nedlands Golf Club Ladies Committee and her proposal has been accepted. Well done, Anita, for your work for Grandcarers.

  • Anniversary Dinner

SERGEANT: Jason van Straalen fined the following members:
  • Anthony McGrath for winning the David Foulkes Trophy at the annual golf day;
  • Ken Ilett for wanting to fine everyone over 25 at the meeting tonight;
  • Lindsay Dry for taking his badge home;
  • David Ellis for saying he’s too nice to dob someone in for a fine;
  • Bruce Jeanes for being seen in a café with a white sports cap on, Hale boys have no manners;
  • Richard Gorham for forgetting which school came second in the Challenge.
GUEST SPEAKERS, paramedics Jen van den Avoort and Sam Elias – introduced by Ann Bray

  • Sam spoke of paramedics providing care in emergency and acute settings. A paramedic is obliged to take a patient to hospital if requested, regardless of the injury. This is different in other States and may be changed in Western Australia so that the paramedic has the authority to refuse to transport a patient if it is not an acute injury or emergency situation. Many times, ambulances are called out as a priority 1 when the ‘emergency’ is much lower. That being said, an ambulance should always be called if there is a potentially acute issue.

  • Jen spoke about being a call taker for St John when she was studying at university. Call takers follow a script, and the first question is location which is imperative before the ambulance can be dispatched. Call takers need to be objective and follow the script so in some ways it is better that the call takers are not medically trained and cannot make decisions.

  • Sam and Jen spoke of counselling available through St John and the minimisation of PTSD.

  • Thank you for the informative and interesting talk and we hope to meet you only at Rotary dinners in a social setting.
