The President advised that our club meetings are back to normal, however, we will still run Zoom meetings to accommodate people that cannot attend in person.

Sam Hardy from the Rotary Club of Crawley was invited to address the meeting in relation to a new fundraising project that his club is involved with
Sam invited all Rotarians to get behind their project which is a concept to support local tourism whilst visiting Kalgoorlie for a weekend.

Kevin Jackson reminded everyone of the upcoming Club Meeting to be held at Foodbank at the Airport on 24th August. A limit of 30 people can attend. We will meet at Foodbank at 5:30 and leave by 7:30. They will prepare the evening meal and it will be a normal club meeting.
Also coming up on 24th September is a night at the Ballet to see the spectacular production of “Dracula”. This event is limited to 8 couples only and these lucky few will be hosted by the WA Ballet company and provided with seating in the Dress Circle.
Kevin will circulate a couple of Boards for these events for members to nominate their participation.

President’ Report:
The President advised that the recent Club Survey is still open for members to have their say. Anthony thanked members that have responded. Initial results are being reviewed.
Board Meeting last Monday:
- All the Committees are Busy putting in place their programmes for this year.
- The Board adopted a Budget for his year which we will provide at the next Club Forum. We acknowledge that Fund Raising will be difficult this year, but we will try to make the functions that we have as successful as possible.
- Slightly revised Fines policy. Smaller number but a little larger $5 or $10 (note or machine) and spread around. Coins are difficult to process now. Members who receive a fine can pay their fine by credit card after the meeting on the way out the door. Do not worry, you will not be missed as records will be kept
SERGEANT Graeme Sansom’s Session with Corporal John McKinnon identified the following worthy recipients of a fine;
Brian English – his Grandson has the potential to be a $1M football player and so Brian can share the family bounty
Pek Goh and Stuart McCoubrie, as Doctors should be setting an example to the Club and wearing face masks but have failed to do so
Bruce Jeanes for not buying his wife, Sue, flowers from Lizzy Bee
John Hopkins for being recognised as the Rotarian who lives furthest from the Club meeting location

Vocational Service Excellence Award 2020
Following the consumption of another fine meal prepared by On Par Catering Peter Marfleet introduced Carol Shannon (CEO Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation who has this year been awarded the Club’s Vocational Excellence Award.

Rotary Awards for Vocational Excellence has now been accepted as an integral part of the Dalkeith Rotary Club’s Vocational Service program.
The criteria for the Citation are as follows;
To recognise Vocational Excellence of the highest order, and
to honour outstanding contributions by individuals or small teams of individuals for significant advancement in their vocational field in Australia.
To inspire further enthusiasm, and
to give added reward to exceptional achievers.
To set an example to others, particularly youth, of the need to strive for Vocational Excellence for the benefit of their discipline and Australia.

Carol Shannon’s involvement with Leeuwin Ocean Adventure spans over 30 years. For the first 27 years Carol was a volunteer, sailing as Cook’s Mate or Purser; chairing the volunteer association; joining the board of directors in 1998 and becoming its chair in about 2007. In 2016 she took over the reins of the organisation as Chief Executive Officer. While she appreciates the beauty of the Sail Training Ship Leeuwin II, it is the magic that is created onboard, the positive influence voyaging has on young people, that has ensured Carol has stayed involved for over three decades.
Holding business qualifications, her career started in merchant banking in London, returning to Western Australia after the best part of a decade and joining Challenge Bank – the link to Leeuwin! From Challenge Bank, Carol joined the Rottnest Island Authority as Business Services Director, followed by a brief stint with Alinta before taking on the role of Corporate Services Director at Perth Zoo. Staying in the conservation field, Carol became the Director of the Conservation Commission of Western Australia before leaving her government roles behind to take up the role at Leeuwin. But, her underlying interest in and passion for wildlife conservation means she still maintains roles as the Treasurer of both Painted Dog Conservation Inc and For the Animals, working with conservation agencies in Southern Africa and Cambodia respectively.”
President Anthony then presented Carol Shannon with the Vocational Excellence Award for 2020 on behalf of the Rotary Club of Dalkeith.
Carol Shannon thanked the Club for honouring her with this award. Carol noted that she is well aware of the very long history with the Rotary Club of Dalkeith and several other Rotary Clubs who have been strong supporters of the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation throughout the years.
Carol informed the Club that her strong passion is to make a significant contribution to the lives of young people and the Leeuwin Foundation provides her with the opportunity to full fill her passion.
Carol told of the difficult times presently being experienced due to Covid-19 has presented the Foundation with some not insignificant challenges. The Foundation has lost 9 voyages which would have generated approximately $600,000 of revenue. Heart warmingly, though, the Foundation has received strong financial support from the State Government and many other local businesses’ which has enabled the Foundation to prepare to return to a full sailing programme. Sailing will recommence in September and hopefully continue uninterrupted from here on in.
During this current period and due to the support mentioned earlier, the Leeuwin is undergoing regular maintenance in dry dock in order to keep the vessel in top condition.
Carol noted that the Leeuwin has accommodated some 45,000 young people who have benefitted from their sailing programmes over the past 32 years.
Several members from the Rotary Club recounted either their own experiences or those of family members whilst sailing on the Leeuwin and without a doubt, the experiences remain firmly well thought of as one of life’s best experiences. A more resounding endorsement of the Foundations activities could not be found.
President Anthony once again provided a thank you to our Guest Speaker Carol Shannon.
