President  John Bolto welcomed Rotarians and our guest to our first  Face-to-Face and  Zoom meeting.

It’s another RCD  first in having two meeting format at the same time.  Hopefully, it all works so that we can accommodate everyone.

 

Pres John welcomed our speaker for tonight,  Mr  Bernie  Foley from  Life  Education  WA  and also a Rotarian.

 

Attendees:   At  NGC 24 member and around 16 members on Zoom.

 

Kevin  Jackson mentioned that  Richard Ranshaw has not been too good of late but after going on antibiotics he is improving and getting better.  (Ed:   RR  then piped -up  on Zoom  and said he was going OK – don’t  write him off yet).

 

A group of members went down to Meadow Springs for golf.  The day was great but the golf was ordinary. 

Richard  Ranshaw advised that he has just been presented with his 4^th  Grandchild,  a  little boy.  They have named him  Arthur James Ranshaw.  All doing well.

 

Nigel Johnson was invited,  on  International Nursing Day,  to go to Sir Charles Gairdner hospital for a celebration.  However, due to the pandemic, it reverted to a fancy  Zoom meeting.   It was great none-the-less.

As the end of the Financial Year is coming close,  Russell will write to all members and ask them to consider a tax-effective donation into the Charitable Trust.

This year the Charitable  Trust has donated  $80,000  to worthwhile organisations to continue going good works.   Your money working hard for great causes.

 

The Club via the Trust as a facilitator assisted in supporting the terrible bushfires. The full details are available by clicking here.

 

Getting back on the horse -  a Club  Services  Meeting this Friday  12  June  2020  at 9 am Little Way  Café,  Nedlands.

 

A meeting will be held next week.

 

The PNG  Book Drive has a small sub-committee  (more welcome )  whose focus is to engage local  Primary Schools.    They will then get things moving from there.

 

Kevin and Richard R  went out to Foodbank last week with The Post.   It was about RCD  donating  5,000 meals thru’  Foodbank to the less fortunate.  The article  was in The Post

Guest  Speaker:   (Mr  Bernie  Foley -  Life Education  WA)

Pres John Bolto introduced Bernie Foley.  Bernie has been the CEO of Life Education WA – 10yrs,  Past president of RC West Perth 14/15,    Disabled Children Foundation – board member,    Central-Eastern Business Assoc – past president,    Accountant by trade, early years with ANZ   and grew up in Kalgoorlie, CBC Kal 59-68.   Welcome!   Bernie spoke and presented about Life  Education WA  which has a number of purpose-built buses that visit schools to educate them about health education.   Their mission is to help children make healthier choices throughout their lives. Mainly it is a drug and cyber safety information but also covers other topics such as mental health and well being.

  

They ensure that their content is very interactive and engaging.   They educate from  Kindy through the Primary School years.   At all times the content is age-appropriate.    A lot of education is based on mental health programs.  They are sorely needed particularly in lower Socio-economic schools because their teachers do not have the time or resources to tackle these areas.    In  1998  they covered  46,000  students but because of budget cuts in  2019  only covered  30,000  students.

 

Funding comes from  State  Government and a small number of great sponsors such as  Alcoa,  Rotary, Stan  Perron,  St George  Foundation and  Yarradale Stud.   The  State  Government funding is becoming harder to get as time goes on even though the need is growing.

 

They evaluate all their programs by the Classroom teachers.

Unfortunately with the COVID crisis, everything has stopped and their future is very uncertain.  The Buses won’t be back at schools this year.  They are looking at virtual reality technology lessons but still needs some work.

Their motto is “  No Child should face Adult problems Alone !”
